Penn State researchers working with teams from other universities and NASA are examining nearby dying stars by looking at the radiation they expel as they burn out. That radiation penetrates our atmosphere, but by the time it gets to the surface not much is left for scientists to examine. These rays must be looked at in the higher parts of the atmosphere. Every year before Lent begins, processions of masked and costumed revelers, often on horseback, go from house to house gathering ingredients for communal gumbos in communities across rural southwest Louisiana. The often-unruly participants in this ancient tradition play as beggars, fools, and thieves as they raid farmsteads and perform in exchange for charity or, in other words, "dance for a chicken."
