Art that is not language: Anthony Forge and Kamasan painting
This lecture discusses the work of Professor Anthony Forge in the field of Balinese Kamasan painting. Anthony Forge argued that art has a visual quality, summed up by a quoted line from dancer Isadore Duncan who said ‘If I could tell you what it meant, there would be no point in dancing it'. His interest in art as non-verbal communication led him to Bali and Kamasan Painting. His work in Bali allowed him to explore the ways in which his Balinese collaborators experienced the world, and to

SecondLife: A Computer-Mediated Tool for Distance-Learning in Architecture Education?
Despite the importance of distance learning for its ability to reach a wide audience, easiness to access materials, and its lower cost compared to traditional learning, architecture education has not been well served by distance education. This is because it has a higher level of learning objectives, it is taught by coaching methodologies, and involves nonverbal forms of communication. One of the most common learning methods used in the design studio is the Criticism/Critique, which is a graphic
El Storyboard y el Animatic en la Ense?anza del Proyecto de Arquitectura [Storyboarding and Animatic
This paper discusses the issues involved with the introduction of the storyboard and the animatic in a design studio exercise. Storyboards - sketches used in film planning -, and the animatic - basically a moving storyboard - allow the student to understand space within in the context of a narrative. The purpose of the exercise was to enable the expression of subjectively experienced space in an early stage of urban context analysis. Differently than the traditional approach to animation which r
Cybrids: Integrating Cognitive and Physical Space in Architecture
People regularly use non-physical, cognitive spaces to navigate and think. These spaces are important to
architects in the design and planning of physical buildings. Cognitive spaces inform design - often underlying
principles of architectural composition. They include zones of privacy, territory and the space of memory and
visual thought. They let us to map our environment, model or plan projects, even imagine places like Heaven
or Hell.
Cyberspace is an electronic extension of this cognitive
Envisioning Cyberspace: The Design of On-Line Communities
The development of the World Wide Web into an active, visual social environment poses unique opportunities for the design professions. Multi-user Domains, social meeting places in cyberspace, are mostly text-based virtual realities which use spatial references to set the stage for social interaction. Over the past year design students at the New Jersey Institute of Technology School of Architecture have investigated several text-based domains. In the course of their work, they envisioned and gra
