The National Film Theatre, 1964
This extract from the 1964 short 'South Bank' offers a tantalising glimpse inside the National Film Theatre over four decades before its reinvention as BFI Southbank. Film-goers emerge from the latest Godard offering and Jeanne Moreau gazes down from the poster board: a nice touch of continuity in an area of London that has continued to evolve well into the 21st century. (Simon McCallum)

Probabilistic Systems Analysis and Applied Probability, Fall 2010
Welcome to 6.041/6.431, a subject on the modeling and analysis of random phenomena and processes, including the basics of statistical inference. Nowadays, there is broad consensus that the ability to think probabilistically is a fundamental component of scientific literacy. For example: The concept of statistical significance (to be touched upon at the end of this course) is considered by the Financial Times as one of "The Ten Things Everyone Should Know About Science". A recent Scienti
Convex Analysis and Optimization, Spring 2010
This course will focus on fundamental subjects in (deterministic) optimization, connected through the themes of convexity, geometric multipliers, and duality. The aim is to develop the core analytical and computational issues of continuous optimization, duality, and saddle point theory using a handful of unifying principles that can be easily visualized and readily understood. The mathematical theory of convex sets and functions will be central, and will allow an intuitive, highly visual, geomet

What Is Energy? Short Demos
Three short, hands-on, in-class demos expand students' understand of energy. First, using peanuts and heat, students see how the human body burns food to make energy. Then, students create paper snake mobiles to explore how heat energy can cause motion. Finally, students determine the effect that heat energy from the sun (or a lamp) has on temperature by placing pans of water in different locations.

Budgeting Basics
Most people would rather stick pins in their eyes than draw up a budget. They may have a point. If you're the type of person who always has plenty of cash, knows exactly where every penny goes, and never has trouble paying bills, skip this lesson. You're either too rich or too smart to need it. For the rest of us, unfortunately, making -- and sticking to -- a budget is the essential tool for ensuring that our money gets used the way we need it to.
