Finding the Equation of a Line
In this video, the teacher shows you how to determine the equation of a line that is perpendicular to another line, and passes through a specific point. (10:28)
More Relatively-Poor People in a Less Absolutely-Poor World [Audio]
Speaker(s): Martin Ravallion | Relative deprivation, shame and social exclusion matter to the welfare of people everywhere, but this fact is ignored by standard measures of economic performance, including poverty. The lecture will argue that such social effects on welfare call for a reconsideration of how we assess global poverty, but they do not support widely used measures of relative poverty. It is argued instead that a new class of measures is called for, and new estimates of global poverty

Making Matter Come Alive
Before life existed on Earth, there was just matter, inorganic dead
"stuff." How improbable is it that life arose? And -- could it use a
different type of chemistry? Using an elegant definition of life
(anything that can evolve), chemist Lee Cronin is exploring this
question by attempting to create a fully inorganic cell using a "Lego
kit" of inorganic molecules -- no carbon -- that can assemble, replicate
and compete. (15:11)
NOVA with Neil deGrasse Tyson: Where Did we Come From?
Nova: Science Now on PBS | "Where did we come from?" with host Neil DeGrasse Tyson explores the origin of our solar system and the start of life itself, how head lice figure in human evolution, and more. Journey back in time to the birth of our solar system to examine whether the key to our planet's existence might have been the explosive shockwave of an ancient supernova. Meet a chemist who has yielded a new kind of "recipe" for natural processes to assemble and create the building blocks of li
Project Management for Scientists and Engineers
The course is taught to undergraduates, graduate students, and professional masters students and involves the areas of organizational behavior & leadership, accounting, marketing, strategy, entrepreneurship, and project management. It is this last area that is covered in this book. Irrespective of your future career in science and engineering you will be involved in projects and an awareness of the factors that enable a successful project is important for all team members. It should be recognize
Expedition 34/35 Mission Overview
Commander Kevin Ford leads Expedition 34 as the six-member crew conducts science and research that cannot be performed on Earth. Ford and the other five crew members Flight Engineers Oleg Novitskiy, Evgeny Tarelkin, Chris Hadfield, Roman Romanenko and Tom Marshburn, discuss the challenges and opportunities of living and working in space. Expedition 34/35 expects visits from a Russian and European cargo vehicle as well as two commercial cargo craft vehicles, the SpaceX Dragon and Orbital Sciences

People-centred designing
Designed products surround us all and range from bus tickets to buildings. This unit focuses firmly on usability and the increasingly important phenomenon of people-centred design. It aims to inform consumers of design (i.e., all of us) about this crucial characteristic of design. The unit is derived from the Open University course T211 on Design and Designing, but as well as stimulating interest in areas of concern for producers of design it might also provide an introduction to engineering, ma
Excerpt from Colombo Plan gala dinner dialogue
Two of the original Colombo Plan students share their reflections on what makes a good education. Humanities combined with a professional qualifications makes for a well rounded graduate.
4.1 The rate of evolution I now want to move away from looking at the challenges facing all aquatic mammals, to examine very briefly what we know about the evolutionary history of the cetaceans. This group has travelled furthest from its terrestrial roots and made the fullest adaptation to life in the sea. Since mammals evolved on land, it has long seemed reasonable to suggest that the origin of whales must have involved an evolutionary transition from the land to the water. But how can we explain the fact that
3.2 Natural dives The physiology of the diving response can be studied in the laboratory, but investigating the behaviour of a diving mammal in its natural environment can be more of a problem. However, modern physiological techniques have made it possible to record continuously physiological variables (such as heart rate) and information on depth and position during the spontaneous dives in the wild that are part of the animal's normal behaviour. Most such findings show that the majority of an animal's dives
2.7 … and becoming more intelligent Intelligence is a useful commodity: it can help an animal to make sense of its environment and cope with the demands of social behaviour (including courtship and competition). Hunters tend to be relatively intelligent, and otters, pinnipeds and cetaceans, for example, share a playful curiosity that is characteristic of animals that catch other animals for a living. Some especially extravagant claims have been made for the intelligence of the toothed whales, largely because these animals use c
2.5 … and getting larger Size offers a number of biological advantages, including some protection from predation, but it can also help in reducing heat loss. A large mammal has a large body mass (generating heat) relative to its surface area (losing heat). But there will be constraints on any evolutionary trend of increasing body mass in some aquatic mammals. Seals, sea-lions and toothed whales have to remain agile enough to chase their prey, and the pinnipeds as a whole have to be able to move about on land, but the
