James Hutton (1726–97) conforms fairly closely to Emerson's identikit picture of an intellectual of the Scottish Enlightenment. His chief scientific work was his Theory of the Earth, which was launched at meetings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1785 and eventually expanded and published in two large volumes, ten years later, in 1795.

Holocaust Survivor Testimony: Nelly Tsypina, part 1/4
Nelli [Nelly] Tsypina was born in Dnepropetrovsk in 1932. In October 1941, together with his grandfather and aunt and thousands of other Jews, Nelli was taken to Krasnopovstancheskaya Balka, a site selected for the murder of local Jews. There she fell into the murder pit but succeeded in climbing out. She spent the remainder of the war under an assumed identity in Dnepropetrovsk with a family that adopted her.
