GPS on the Move
During a scavenger hunt and an art project, students learn how to use a handheld GPS receiver for personal navigation. Teachers can request assistance from the Institute of Navigation to find nearby members with experience in using GPS and in locating receivers to use.

An Underground River
Groundwater is one of the largest sources of drinking water, so environmental engineers need to understand groundwater flow in order to tap into this important resource. Environmental engineers also study groundwater to predict where pollution from the surface may end up. In this lesson, students will learn how water flows through the ground, what an aquifer is and what soil properties are used to predict groundwater flow.

Factors Affecting Friction
Based on what they have already learned about friction, students formulate hypotheses concerning the effects of weight and contact area on the amount of friction between two surfaces. In the Associated Activities (Does Weight Matter? and Does Area Matter?), students design and conduct simple experiments to test their hypotheses, using procedures similar to those used in the previous lesson (Discovering Friction). Nelli [Nelly] Tsypina was born in Dnepropetrovsk in 1932.
In October 1941, together with his grandfather and aunt and thousands of other Jews, Nelli was taken to Krasnopovstancheskaya Balka, a site selected for the murder of local Jews. There she fell into the murder pit but succeeded in climbing out.
She spent the remainder of the war under an assumed identity in Dnepropetrovsk with a family that adopted her.
She was reunited with her parents after the war.
