Frontiers of knowledge: Thailand's border patrol police in the age of Internet research
Over the past decade, Thailand has experienced rapid growth in the number of Internet users and today about one third of the Thai population is regularly online. These Internet users have readily become producers of content, and the proliferation of local language material sees Thai ranked in the top 20 global Internet languages. Thai security agencies have embraced these trends and now maintain a wide range of official websites. In this paper I sketch out a tentative methodology for studying Th
Week 10 Lecture: Landcare as a Case Study of Community Responses to Land and Water Degradation
Landcare has been hailed as a good example of a grassroots movement that involves the community in natural resource management. This week's lecture will discuss Australia's history of natural resource management, the role Landcare has played in dealing with sustainability issues, and analyse some of the notable strengths and weaknesses of the Landcare movement as a means to link local knowledge, and local action, with government decision making.

Week 09 Lecture: Regional Planning
At what scale can environmental policy and planning best give efficacy to the sustainable management of resources? This week's lecture on regional planning draws together many arguments previously raised in the course to reflect on the ways Australia can be divided into smaller management regions so as to implement and manage environmental policy and planning initiatives at the grassroots level. Regional planning is proposed as one potentially effective way to balance the top down policy initiat
Week 08 Lecture: role of indigenous people in EPP
Involving Indigenous peoples in environmental policy and planning is both a valuable and difficult exercise for policy makers to manage. On the one hand, Indigenous peoples can help manage the land, and provide a source of local knowledge for better land management, however decision makers have often overlooked this source of knowledge due to a lack of understanding, or systemic cultural differences which impede an effective exchange of ideas. This lecture will explore the current role of Indige

12.113 Structural Geology (MIT)
Structural geology is the study of processes and products of rock deformation. This course introduces the techniques of structural geology through a survey of the mechanics of rock deformation, a survey of the features and geometries of faults and folds, and techniques of strain analysis. Regional structural geology and tectonics are introduced. Class lectures are supplemented by lab exercises and demonstrations as well as field trips to local outcrops.
Calculus on the Web
COW is an internet utility for learning and practicing calculus. The principal purpose of COW is to provide you, the student or interested user, with the opportunity to learn and practice problems in calculus (and in the future other topics in mathematics) in a friendly environment via the internet. The most important feature of the COW is that you get to know whether your answer is correct almost immediately. It is as if you had a tutor looking over your shoulder and helping you along as you wo
