An Advisory QoS Service for GRID Based Learning Environments
This paper argues that the assumption of end-to-end QoS provision for use in Grid based applications is unsafe. We present an architecture which provides an adaptive QoS service for GRID applications which are prepared to adapt rather than assume the best and then suffer the worst. This is particularly relevant to Internet based GRIDs. An example application from the field of collaborative learning environments is given, featuring adaptive QoS for Real Time Protocol (RTP) based audio and visual
Puttin’ It All Together
On the topic of energy related to motion, this summary lesson is intended to tie together the concepts introduced in the previous four lessons and show how the concepts are interconnected in everyday applications. A hands-on activity demonstrates this idea and reinforces students’ math skills in calculating energy, momentum and frictional forces.
You Are There… First Flight
Students learn about archives and primary sources as they research original historical documents. While preparing an imaginative first-person account as if witnessing an historical event, they learn to appreciate the value of the first-person, eye-witness account and understand its limitations. Note: The literacy activities for the Mechanics unit are based on physical themes that have broad application to our experience in the world — concepts of rhythm, balance, spin, gravity, levity, inertia
Adaptive learning scenarios for detection of misconceptions about electricity and remediation
Our main objective is to model the knowledge used by learners in order to solve problems about electricity. We are searching means to do a diagnosis about student's activity based on a microworld of electric circuits. Once the diagnosis realized, we try to provide the learner with the most relevant remediation with regard to his/her misconceptions.
Students explore the physical and psychological effect of stress and tension on human beings. Concepts of stress and stress management are introduced. Students discover how perception serves to fuel a huge industry dedicated to minimizing risk and relieving stress. Students complete a writing activity focused on developing critical thinking skills. Note: The literacy activities for the Mechanics unit are based on physical themes that have broad application to our experience in the world — conc
Students explore the physical and psychological effect of stress and tension on human beings. They develop their observing, thinking, writing and teamwork skills by working on a group art project and reporting about it. They learn about the stages of group formation, group dynamics and team member roles that make for effective teams. In the process, they discover how collective action can foster a sense of community support, which can alleviate personal feelings of stress and tension. Note: The
The Big Mo
Momentum is not only a physical principle; it is a psychological phenomenon. Students learn how the “Big Mo” of the bandwagon effect contributes to the development of fads and manias, and how modern technology and mass media accelerate and intensify the effect. Students develop media literacy and critical thinking skills to analyze trends and determine the extent to which their decisions may be influenced by those who manipulate a few opinion leaders. Note: The literacy activities for the Me
Instructional Engineering for Learning Objects Repository Networks
Knowledge management in organizations, the learning objects paradigm and the advent of a new Web generation, the "Semantic Web", are major actual trends that reveal a new potential for a renewed distance learning pedagogy, but at a certain number of conditions. The first and foremost is the use of education modeling languages and instructional engineering methods to help decide how to assemble learning objects in meaningful learning and knowledge management environment. This article proposes a s
A Case of Innovation
A white paper is a focused analysis often used to describe how a technology solves a problem. In this literacy activity, students write a simplified version of a white paper on an alternative electrical power generation technology. In the process, they develop their critical thinking skills and become aware of the challenge and promise of technological innovation that engineers help to make possible. This activity is geared towards fifth grade and older students and computer capabilities are req
