Get Smart! Smartboards in K-3 Classrooms
In today's technologically savvy world, internet, computer and video games, and television play a main role in students' lives - shouldn't they play a role in the classroom, too? Smartboard is a great tool for teachers to use in their lessons - it brings technology to the classroom, allows students to have hands-on experiences in their learning, and can be operated with virtually the same skills it takes to operate a computer. This module will explore the use of Smartboard to enhance learning in
Quantitative Data Activity
The activity involves a set of data dealing with the percentage difference between measure calories and labeled calories of particular items, in two categories, per item and per gram. Students are asked to make stem-and-leaf plots, dotplots, and histograms of the two variables. The students are then ...
Regression Activity
This activity focuses on basic ideas of linear regression. It covers creating scatterplots from data, describing the association between two variables, and correlation as a measure of linear association.
Star Library: What Makes the Standard Deviation Larger or Smaller?
The activity is designed to help students develop a better intuitive understanding of what is meant by variability in statistics. Emphasis is placed on the standard deviation as a measure of variability. As they learn about the standard deviation, many students focus on the variability of bar heights ...
Short Investigative Exercises Designed to Get Students to Think
This series of exercises is developed for students interested in health and natural sciences with little to no background in science and is meant to develop their reasoning skills.

Using Computer-Interfaced Physiological Measurement Systems in the Biology Laboratory
Students in General Biology perform two different laboratory exercises using computer-based physiological measurement systems to record data from student subjects. Using equipment from Intelitool, students measure resting and post-exercise ECGs, noting relative changes in each portion of the tracing. Then in a second exercise students measure lung volumes and capacities in resting and post-exercise subjects. Forced expiratory volumes (F.E.V.) for 1, 2, and 3 seconds are also measured. Notes for
Inca Investigation
This OLogy activity gives kids a chance to test their investigation skills while learning about daily life for the Incas. Inca Investigation begins with an introduction to archaeologist Craig Morris and the ancient Inca city that his team excavated in the Andes mountains. Then kids are given detailed directions for how to play Inca Investigation, which includes tips to help them better examine evidence. At any time, they can get help, learn how to read a plan, or browse a book about Inca history
A Genetics Lab in a Very Unusual Place
This online article, from the museum's Musings newsletter for educators, looks at the fully functional Genetics Laboratory that was part of the exhibition The Genomic Revolution. It discusses: the significance of the recent sequencing of the human genome in a historical perspective the process visitors underwent during their hour-and-a-half visit to the lab, where they extracted, isolated, visualized, and sequenced their DNA the follow-up activities for visitors on the AMNH Web site.
Video Gallery: What Is Time and Motion?
This online video gallery is from the museum's Seminars on Science, a series of distance-learning courses designed to help educators meet the new national science standards. Part of the Frontiers in Physical Science seminar, the gallery features two videos, available in broadband and modem formats and with a printable PDF transcript. What Is Motion?explains Galilean relativity and why it breaks down when you're trying to measure things traveling at or near the speed of light. What Is Time?explai
Indians and Europeans on the Northwest Coast, 1774–1812
