Teenage Pregnancy in the United States 1950-1990 : Analysis Using Census Data and Contingency Table
This social science lab exercise uses Census data to examine teenage pregnancy in the United States over time and by socio-demographic variables. Students will learn how to access and interpre data as well as begin to think sociologically about teen pregnancy patterns and risk factors.
Assimilation of N2O in the Upper Atmosphere Using a Kalman Filter: N2O Mixing Ratio
This series of animations shows assimilation of N2O in the upper atmosphere using observations from the Cryogenic Limb Etalon Spectrometer (CLAES) on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS). Winds were provided by the Goddard EOS Data Assimilation System (GEOS-DAS). Flow is at the 850K isentropic level. N2O mixing ratio is expressed in parts per billion volume (ppbv).

"One Country! One Language! One Flag!" The Invention of an American Tradition
Most people assume that the pledge of allegiance is as old as the Republic. In fact, it was invented in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, director of youth activities for the magazine Youth's Companion. Bellamy drew up the "pledge to the flag" (as it was then called) and publicized it as part of the activities surrounding the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in America. On Columbus Day in 1892, ten million children recited Bellamy's pledge and it soon became a daily ritual in American schoolrooms.
