Teaching Western Blots with T antigen and p53
Students perform Western blots with polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of detergent extracts of SV40-transformed cell lines grown in monolayer culture. The gels are blotted onto nitrocellulose and treated with a monoclonal antibody against SV40 T antigen or against the tumor suppressor p53. Blots are then treated with a secondary antibody (anti-mouse IgG conjugated to horseradish peroxidase), and exposed to revealing chemicals and x-ray film. I give one application: induction of p53 by ultraviol

Stealth Learning: Acquiring Knowledge About Vascular Plant Structure While Using a Vegetative Key
Many students find it tedious to learn the terminology that is used to describe the vegetative structure of vascular plants. An effective method is to acquire these skills "accidentally", in the process of identifying unfamiliar plants. This exercise uses a vegetative key to woody plants within walking distance of the lab. Before the lab, plants are labeled with alphabetic tags. Students are given a brief introduction, and then they attempt to identify each labeled plant using the key. If their
Mapping the Surface of a Planet Teacher Guide
This activity guide illustrates how teachers can use planetary comparisons between Earth and Mars to teach basic geologic activities - i.e. volcanoes, impact cratering, layering, river processes, and crosscutting relationships to help the students understand a planet's history. This lesson is using current science results, as it contains actual orbital data from the Mars Global Surveyor mission. The lessons in this activity are aligned to the National Science Education Standards and help student
