Jazz is a uniquely American form of music. It is a combination of all different types of music and cultures. It is an improvisational art that is forever changing, but deeply rooted in the blues. Ken Burns examined its history, and stars, in a documentary which aired on PBS.

This tone poem begins with its most familiar part, called "dawn," "sunrise," or just "introduction." It is the theme to Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey." Used ever since to indicate the feeling of something happening on a grand scale, including the television transfer of Mike Teavee in the 2005 film "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory." This performance is by the Staatskapelle Dresden, conducted by Giuseppe Sinopoli Jan., 24, 1998 at the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Japan.

This video is a very good introduction to the pop art style as well as a number of great pop artists. The video begins with a narration that introduces some of the leading pop artists of the world. The video continues by showing the works of these artists and talking about what their artwork represents.

This video is designed to provide a basic introduction to gears suitable for grades 4 to 9. Gear rotation, gear ratio, rates of rotation, mechanical advantage and examples of use are included. A second video, " Time, Clocks and Gears" explains how gears are used in mechanical clocks to control the hands on an analog clock.
Pollinators and Pollination
This 4 minute slide show is set to soothing music with labels for each picture. Students must be able to read the labels (not narrated). Bright, colorful pictures depict various pollinators (bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, flies, wind etc). Parts of the flower (stamen and stigma) are briefly addressed at the beginning of the show. This would make a nice introduction to pollination even at the lower grade levels. Run time -3:56.

A very general video, check sound quality, that deals with some of the major concerns facing the Founding Fathers. Perhaps best used as a general introduction.
The Bill of Rights
This is an excellent video that goes through each of the amendments in rapid fashion. This would be an excellent introduction to the Bill of Rights, but lacks the depth needed for most civics classes.

Radish seeds sprouting: time lapse
A great example of germination. This time lapse video shows how radish plants go from seeds, to seedlings, to plants in just nine days. Amazing how fast the radishes grew. Time lapse sequence set to take a frame each 14 minutes 24 seconds. The time lapse spans 9 days. Causes of War: The Compromise of 1850
The slavery issue in the new territories came up again in 1850 and this video deals with that and mentions the Underground Railroad and Fugitive Slave Act. However, there is no depth and thus this video is only valuable as a brief introduction.
