Cardiology Examination - Carotid Pulse
Examine the carotid pulse.
1. Observe for carotid pulsations.
2. Place your fingers behind the patient's neck and compress the carotid artery on one side with your thumb at or below the level of the cricoid cartilage. Press firmly but not to the point of
discomfort. Avoid compressing both sides at the same time. This could cut off the blood supply to the brain and cause syncope. Avoid compressing
the carotid sinus higher up in the neck. This could lead to bradycardia and depressed bloo
Cardiology Examination - Auscultation for bruits
If the patient is middle-aged or elderly, you should auscultate for bruits. A bruit is often, but not always, a sign of arterial narrowing and risk of a stroke.
- Place the bell of the stethoscope over each carotid artery in turn. You
may use the diaphragm if the patient's neck is highly contoured.
- Ask the patient to stop breathing for a moment.
- Listen for a blowing or rushing sound-a bruit. Do not be confused by heart sounds or murmurs transmitted from the chest.

The human side of e-learning: Real people subjective experiences in virtual classrooms
This paper is based on a study of the subjective aspects of the student/e-learning platform tutor relationship. To find out how people feel in the role of ‘e-students’ or ‘e-tutors’, we have analyzed a set of testimonies collected through fifty five interviews. The interviewees were invited to speak and write about what they feel as e-learning subjects. Through their discourse, we could identify what kind of virtual-human relationships they have developed in this kind of environment. As well
The relation between prior knowledge and students' collaborative discovery learning processes
In this study we investigate how prior knowledge influences knowledge development during collaborative discovery learning. Fifteen dyads of students (pre-university education, 15-16 years old) worked on a discovery learning task in the physics field of kinematics. The (face-to-face) communication between students was recorded and the interaction with the environment was logged. Based on students' individual judgments of the truth-value and testability of a series of domain-specific propositions,
Structuring and merging Distributed Content
A flexible approach for structuring and merging distributed learning object is presented. At the basis of this approach there is a formal representation of a learning object, called attribute structure.
Attribute structures are labeled directed graphs representing structured information on the learning objects. When two or more learning objects are merged, the corresponding attribute structures are unified, and the unified structure is attached to the resulting learning object.
