A primer in MathML
This course, as the name suggest, is intended to help authors who want to publish mathematical content on web. The emphasis here is to enable learners to quickly adapt to the extensive mathML markup language and begin writing codes even without a specialized editor, available commercially. The course is presented in the form of a tutorial, which essentially saves on unnecessary details. This tutorial is not intended currently (may be supplemented later with the help coming from others) to be a c
Learn Chinese via Mobile Phones
This course teaches Chinese language via mobile phones. As such, learners can access them anywhere, anytime. The course is suitable for both children and adults, Chinese and English speakers. The training pedagogy is that of the Imperial Chinese language training method, which had been used for over 2000 years to build solid language foundation. Research into how language was taught in Imperial China indicates that the elementary language education emphasized small chunks of rote-learning, model
Developing Analytical and Communication Skills in a Mock-Trial Course Based on the Famous Woburn, Ma
This Journal of Geoscience Education article discusses a mock trial in which undergraduates serve as expert witnesses and law students serve as their attorneys. The article identifies the trial as an effective vehicle for developing quantitative skills and enhancing written and oral communication skills. The course discussed is unabashedly about applying scientific principles to solve real-world problems. The entire course revolves around the analysis, interpretation, and presentation of scienti
Cascades Volcano Observatory
This website is the homepage for the United States Geological Survey Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO). The website covers a variety of information including CVO information, volcano descriptions, menus of interest and miscellaneous information. The site also contains numerous special features ranging from educational outreach to news and current events.
Early Image: A collection of illustrations from popular sources.
Early Image is a collection of extinct-animal paintings and sketches produced before 1923 (and therefore in the public domain). Some of the works are of Victorian age and may lend atmosphere to a class emphasizing the history of geology. The works are divided into two categories; prehistoric life before KT and prehistoric life after KT.

Human Tube, A
Against a background of high-rises and rubble, the image of a young man running across an empty lot is repeated. A sense of urgency builds. Buildings explode and crumble to the ground. A hand-held camera surveys the moving ground. Images are blurred, erased, distorted, replaced, and repeated to create this dramatic short work by Paul Garrin. Dramatic electronic music was composed and performed by Ryuichi Sakamoto. The piece is approximately five minutes in length and was broadcast as a segment of
Symmetries and Their Properties-Part 2: Reflections
This is the second i-Math in a four-part series of i-Maths entitled Symmetries and Their Properties. In this second i-Math you will investigate reflection, mirror, or bilateral symmetry. Mirrors can be used to create reflection symmetry. Many objects in nature, such as butterflies, the human body, and many types of leaves have bilateral symmetry. Objects we use every day, such as spoons, chairs, and cars also have bilateral symmetry. In this i-Math, you will learn about the mathematical properti
You Decide: Should couples consider global population issues before deciding to have more than one c
This educational guide focuses on global population issues and decisions couples may want to consider when having more than one child. Students are invited to examine the arguments on both sides of the debate, developing critical thinking skills as they work through the activities. Students will learn how to support their arguments with evidence and reason. It is expected that at the end of this guide students will determine where they stand on this controversial issue.
Representing History: Cambodia - Through the Shadows
This unit introduces students to the modern history of Cambodia in the context of the Cold War. It examines the relationship between Cambodia and Vietnam and the way both countries became drawn into the power struggle between the US and Western capitalism and the Sino Soviet communist axis in the east. Through viewing and discussion of the video and investigating the web resources, students can begin to understand the conventions of documentary in offering access to a version of the truth.
Will the Real Cinderella Please Stand Up?
Students learn that folk stories can be told in many ways and learn to write their own Cinderella story and script according to their own gender or culture. They also become aware of the steps that are necessary to make a film as they learn the various parts that go into the process.
Modeling Research Skills
The fifth lesson in the Family, History and Memory module centers on developing students' research skills. Using the book The Diary of Anne Frank as a starting point, it guides students through the necessary steps for conducting good-quality research and developing a subsequent presentation. Students work as a group to develop their presentation. The lessons can be delivered as a module or as individual units.
Lewis and Clark: Mapping the West
This site features maps of the famous expedition. The Corps of Discovery collected 30 maps from Indians, trappers, and traders, and prepared 140 maps -- most of them drawn or compiled by Clark. The website shows the King map (created for the expedition) and the first map displaying their geographical discoveries. Descriptions of expedition members, life on the trail, and help provided by Indian tribes are included.

It considers the history of our current understandings of 'mental health' and 'illness' with focus on the concepts of anxiety and depression, and looks at potential gains and losses in using diagnostic labels in counselling and pyschotherapy.
Building Molecular Models of DNA, Protein, and Lipids
Molecular models of DNA, protein (alpha-helix and beta-pleated sheet), and lipids are built to scale. With a minimum of scientific jargon, these laboratory exercises effectively display the important aspects of three-dimensional shape and spatial orientation that are poorly presented in textbook illustrations and demonstrate how the shape of molecules and weak chemical associations like hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions combine to form the macromolecular associations fundam
Plant Hormones: Bioassay for Gibberellin
This simple assay makes use of the ability of the plant hormone GA3 to induce starch breakdown in the endosperm of a barley seed from which the embryo has been removed. The effect of the hormone is clear and repeatable. This exercise can be used in introductory biology courses to demonstrate a basic plant process, or can be modified and used to investigate more sophisticated questions in a developmental biology course.
AIRS Volumetric Cloud Data (Fly In)
This visualization shows Aqua-AIRS simulated volumetric cloud data for September 13, 1999. The data was created using the Finite Volume Community Climate Model (FVCCM). Temperature and cloud data sets were match rendered for cross dissolves in post production. This visualization was created as a part of the Aqua prelaunch package.
