Interpreting Electrospray Mass Spectra
This site is a tutorial on interpretation of electrospray mass spectra of multiply charged molecules. It provides a simple explanation of the electrospray process and the potential for the creation of multiply charged species, especially when working with peptides. The mathematics of determining the charge state and molecular weight of the peptide is also explained. Although this site provides a good foundation on electrospray MS of peptides, students requiring an advanced understanding of MS
Tissues of Life
This Web site from the Science Museum of Minnesota offers a fun and interactive way to learn about the structure and function of the body's tissues. While some activities provided are designed to complement an on-site visit to the Tissues of Life exhibit, the Web site also includes many stand-alone Web-based features. For example, with Explore Body Tissues, students can take a look at cross-sections of actual human bodies, browse through a gallery of scar photos (and perhaps add a photo of their
Experiences of Racism Among African American Parents and the Mental Health of Their Preschool-Aged C
Objectives. We examined the relationship between parents’ experiences of racism and children’s well-being and the influence of the residential neighborhood characteristics on this relationship.
Methods. African American families were recruited from Baltimore neighborhoods. Parental measures included racism experiences and coping. Neighborhood measures included demographic characteristics, social cohesion, and social climate. Children’s mental health was assessed with the Child Behavior Ch
Racial Differences in 30-Day Mortality for Pulmonary Embolism
Objectives. Previous studies reported a higher incidence of in-hospital mortality for Black patients who had pulmonary embolism than for White patients. We used a large statewide database to compare 30-day mortality (defined as death within 30 days from the date of latest hospital admission) for Black and White patients who were hospitalized because of pulmonary embolism.
Methods. The study cohort consisted of 15531 discharged patients who had been treated for pulmonary embolism at 186 Pennsylv
Stage at Diagnosis and Survival in a Multiethnic Cohort of Prostate Cancer Patients
Objectives. We evaluated the effects of socioeconomic status and comorbidity on stage of disease and survival among 1,509 population-based prostate cancer patients.
Methods. We applied logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards regression to data from Whites, African Americans, and Asian Americans who were diagnosed from 1987 to 1991.
Results. Patients with existing comorbid conditions were less likely than those without these conditions to be diagnosed with advanced cancer. Compared wit
Portfolio Building
The aim of this lesson is to develop students' understanding of the importance of portfolio building. It is the seventh lesson in the study skills series and is intended to support adult learners who are embarking on a course of study and need to acquire skills which will help them to be successful. The lessons are designed as a package with key skills reinforced in each subsequent lesson so that a study culture is developed over time. They can be delivered sequentially or used individually, as
Poetry
This site provides more than 40 books of (and about) poetry written in the 19th century.
Crack detection in a three dimensional body
We propose a method of analyzing a crack in a three dimensional body. We treat the problem as an inverse problem and apply Green’s Theorem, Trace Theorem, and the Fredholm Alternative. We model the problem using Helmholtz equation.,Thesis (M.S.)--Wichita State University, Mathematics and Statistics.,"May 2006.",Includes bibliographic references (leaves 10-11)
Exploratory Pharmacokinetic Study
This dataset comes from a study of 7 healthy males given a topical medication. Blood samples were collected at specified time intervals, and data on isomer concentrations were collected. Questions from this study refer to the relationship between time and concentration of the isomer. A text file version of the data is found in the relation link.
Chart the Effects of Smoking
Students will estimate the amount of time they have each been exposed to second-hand smoke throughout their lives and chart the results as a class, discussing possible consequences of different levels of exposure.
2009 National Hydrologic Assessment
This site from the Hydrologic Information Center of the National Weather Service discusses the flood risk in the United States. Maps and satellite images support the text. The site also provides information about snow levels, stream flow, soil conditions, forecasts and outlooks.
Impulsive self-similar processes, with applications in broadband communication system modeling
In broadband networks, bandwidth requirements of multimedia applications and size ofthe associated files deviate frequently and significantly from their average value and resultin impulsive and self-similar tra±c. Impulsiveness implies that the second- or higher-orderstatistics of the process are infinite. On the other hand, self-similarity translates to strongcorrelation between the process samples. Self-similarity has been traditionally defined basedon second-order statistics, e.g. a power-
Peptide-modified polymer for endothelialization
A functionalized polycarbonate material derived from tyrosine containing varyinglevels of free acid functionality along the backbone, poly(DTE-co-X%DT carbonate), hasbeen functionalized with a peptide to promote endothelial cell attachment and evaluatedas a potential synthetic vascular graft material. Lysine derivatives have been produced topromote the attachment of engineered peptides for promoting endothelialization.NMR has been used to analyze the initial structure of the poly(DTEC-co-X%DTC)
Wetting on flexible substrates: a finite element formulation
Wetting is an important phenomenon in industrial applications such as coating industry as it could affect the coating uniformity and production rate. In modeling dynamic wetting on rigid solids, one of the challenges is to relieve the singularity in the viscous stress arising at the dynamic contact line due to double valued velocity. The singularity arising at the contact line is a mathematical singularity and not a physical singularity and hence, needs to be relieved. There are several models t
Case study of a professional development program: meaningful technology integration in secondary edu
This case study investigated the effects of the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of a professional development program to facilitate the meaningful integration of technology into the curriculum for secondary teachers at a large suburban school. This study addressed the problem of the high cost of technology for a district that had yielded disappointing levels of meaningful technology integration in the teaching and learning process. The professional development program was bas
Using just-in-time information to support scientific discovery learning about geometrical optics in
Many problems that learners regularly encounter during discovery learning with computer-based simulations have been identified. A number of studies have examined different ways of support for discovery learning by facilitating the learning process. This study examines the effect of facilitating access to prior knowledge through just-in-time information. It is expected that access to just-in-time information will foster learning but will not interfere with it. To test these hypotheses, an experim

Understanding Leukemias
This tutorial is designed to aid medical students at all levels understand the laboratory diagnosis of leukemias. It includes introductory material on the basic laboratory tests specific to diagnoses, their general application and pitfalls in interpretation. The introductory material is followed by a series of short clinical vignettes illustrating the major categories of leukemia. This tutorial focuses on diagnosis and relative little on treatment is included. he tutorial concludes with a short
