Ollanta Humala has been inaugurated as Peru's 97th president and the country's first leftist leader in 36 years. New presidents of Peru are always sworn in on Fiestas Patrias—or 28 July—which is a national holiday.
Among other things, Humala's inaugural address pledged to raise workers' wages and impose taxes on global mining companies who plan to invest about $35 billion in Peru over the next decade.
