Introduction

Successful transitions – whether from lower secondary to upper secondary; at age 16; into work-based training or university; or into work at any age – are life-enhancing for individuals and crucial to our future social and economic well-being. They are also an indicator of a good school. Careers education and guidance (CEG) is therefore at the heart of a school's personal development programme and all teachers have a role in securing successful transitions for their students.

4.3 Asymmetry between labour and capital

Finally, stepping back to get a broader picture, I would like to point to the asymmetry built into the emerging institutional framework governing international economic relations, of which the WTO is one important pillar. The various WTO agreements encourage free movement of goods and certain kinds of services. Possible agreements on cross-border investment and competition policy may allow for freer international movement of capital, already encouraged by the IMF. Yet there is no move towards

3.1 Pusztai's experiments

Issues of 'fairness' and our obligations to the developing world do not in themselves explain why the issue of GM plants attracts such controversy. This section focuses on an episode in the fraught history of the development of GM foods that had a significant effect on public attitudes in the UK. In particular, we look at the experiments of Arpad Pusztai in the late 1990s at the Rowett Institute near Aberdeen, Scotland. These experiments are of particular interest to us because they reveal a

4.1 When climate changes

We have seen that human-induced climate change poses a challenge for people who live on islands. Such changing patterns and extremes of climate also put pressure on the other living things that are part of the make-up of island territories. However, long before human beings became aware that they could transform the flows that constitute climate, they and other species were already taking advantage of these same flows to help create the very territories that are now under threat. But have the

2.5.2 Punctuation

Some of the sentences we have looked at are harder to understand than they might be because they are not very well punctuated. Punctuation marks are the ‘stops’ in a sentence that divide it up into parts. They make it easier to follow the meaning of the words. For instance, it is easier to read this sentence of Philip's if we put a comma after ‘wealthy’:

With society becoming more wealthy, it was possible for t

2.4 Summary of Section 2

  1. The typical elements can be displayed in a mini-Periodic Table of eight Groups and seven Periods (Figure 18). The Periods are numbered from 1 to 7 and the Groups are labelled I-VIII.

  2. Metals appear on the left of this table, non-metals on the right and semi-metals in between.

2 Creationism in disguise

In recent years, creationists have re-branded their hypothesis as 'intelligent design', which asserts that the apparently designed fit of organisms to their conditions of life necessarily implies the existence of an intelligent designer. This idea is no more than the old 'argument from design', promulgated most famously by William Paley in his fable of chancing upon a watch and inferring a watchmaker, which the theory of evolution by natural selection refutes, as brilliantly explained by Rich

EN-2. The diversity of life, the driving force of cultivated ecosystems. (Vidéo)

Etienne Hainzelin presents the main sorts of ecosystem services evidenced by the Millenium Impact Assessment (2005). He shows that, during the last decades, the development of an industrial agriculture especially took place by the replacement of a part of those ecosystem services by the use of fertilizers and pesticides.

3.8 Evaluating strategy and presenting outcomes

By now you will have found out about and sampled different resources for learning and used different ways to learn. But the structured approach used in this section is one of the main resources for developing and improving your other key skills.

So how do you know if you have learned? How do you know if you have improved? How do you know if you are meeting the standard for improving your own learning and performance expected of someone doing a course in higher education or using higher

Got Dirty Air?
This lesson introduces students to the concepts of air pollution and technologies that have been developed by engineers to reduce air pollution. Students develop an understanding of visible air pollutants with an incomplete combustion demonstration, a "smog in a jar" demonstration, construction of simple particulate matter collectors and by exploring engineering roles related to air pollution. Next, students develop awareness and understanding of the daily air quality and trends in air quality u

Let's Heat Things Up!
Students observe demonstrations, and build and evaluate simple models to understand the greenhouse effect, the role of increased greenhouse gas concentration in global warming, and the implications of global warming theory for engineers, themselves and the Earth. In an associated literacy activity, students learn how a bill becomes law and research global warming legislation.
