Problem Structuring in Architectural Design
The purpose of this research is to describe in operational terms the process of problem structuring while solving spatial problems in architectural design. The designer's behavior is described in terms of problem structuring, when problem parameters are established or transformed, and in terms of problem solving when these parameters are satisfied in a design solution. As opposed to problem solving, the structuring of problems is an under-studied but crucial aspect of complex tasks such as desig

Three-dimensional Input and Visualization
The aim of this chapter is to investigate techniques by which man-computer interaction could be improved, specifically in the context of architectural applications of CAD. In this application the object being designed is often an assembly of defined components. Even if the building is not actually fabricated from such components, it is usually conceptualized in these terms. In a conventional graphics- based CAD system these components are usually represented by graphical icons which are displaye

Design Generation of the Central Asian Caravanserai
Challenges for the study of Islamic architecture include its abundance and diversity in expression and its classification based on distinct functional or stylistic types. We address these issues by presenting shape grammars as a methodology for the analysis and design generation of Islamic architecture, with a specific example in the form of a parametric shape grammar for central Asian caravanserais. The grammar is developed by identifying distinct design types. Shape rules are created based on

Architecture as Drawing, Perception and Cognition
This work is about realizing that human perception is inherent to architecture. It is an asset and a trait subject to training and development in an empirical way, involving physical and manual action. It cannot be taught literally through convention and logic reasoning. It is a human achievement of great significance built on intellectual and scientific knowledge. It is something, being physical and empirical, that is supported on instrumental procedure. The computer, as a machine and an instru

Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) porous scaffold for tissue engineering.
The patients own cells are seeded onto the scaffold and allowed to attach and start producing new bone. The construct is implanted into the defect site, where eventually the polymer will biodegrade and be completely removed, leaving a natural autogenous bone graft. This technique is particularly useful for large defects, or where the host bed is compromised due to disease, although it is still at the research stage. Average Pore Size 350-550 micrometre, porosity estimated at 35-45%.

Geometric Modeling : a Survey
Computer programs are being developed to aid the design of physical systems ranging from individual mechanical parts to entire buildings or ships. These efforts highlight the importance of computer models of three dimensional objects. Issues and alternatives in geometric modeling are discussed and illustrated with comparisons of 11 existing modelling systems, in particular coherently-structured models of polyhedral solids where the faces may be either planar or curved. Semantic Interpretation of Architectural Drawings
The paper reviews the needs and issues of automatically interpreting architectural drawings into building model representations. It distinguishes between recognition and semantic interpretation and reviews the steps involved in developing such a conversion capability, referring to the relevant literature and concepts. It identifies two potentially useful components, neither of which has received attention. One is the development of a syntactically defined drafting language. The other is a strate

Lecture 14: Innovation, Spin-out Companies and Nanotechnology
Professor Peter Dobson on "Innovation, Spin-out Companies and Nanotechnology" Innovation is what happens between the invention stage and the generation of revenue arising from the invention. For a knowledge economy such as in the UK, it is imperative that we can optimize innovation. At Begbroke we have been trying to understand the dynamics and barriers to innovation by creating a unique Science Park where high technology spin-off companies work on the same site as interdisciplinary University r
