Molecular Stepping Stones
A molecular approach to biology must develop in students an understanding of molecules, their interactions and the consequences of these interactions. Biological phenomenon now more than ever rely on chemical and physical principles for molecular explanations of the phenomenon. We have selected 10 physical-chemical principles that underlie many biological processes: we call them "Molecular Stepping Stones." Below are links to entry level model-based activities for the Stepping Stones.
Amplification of Biochemical Signals: the ELISA Test
Students are introduced to the role of molecular shape, weak attractions and charge in biology and biochemistry, and then undertake a simulated Direct ELISA test.
Fast Scan Voltammetry
A short presentation of theory and practice of electrochemistry focused on use of microelectrodes and micro-bands in flow cells. Problems encountered are addressed and response characteristics discussed.
Chemical Equilibria: The Law of Mass Action
Fundamental ideas and terminology of equilibria from a general chemistry perspective. A focus on closed systems, reversible chemical reactions, the law of mass action, Q and K. Also included are several multiple-choice questions that test the theories discussed. This site provides supplementary material that could be useful to beginning students in general and analytical chemistry.
Cyclic Voltammetry
This site provides an excellent experiment involving cyclic voltammetry at a gold electrode. The experiment includes a detailed introduction to the topics of electrode capacitance, electrode reactions, and flux of the electroactive species to electrode surface. Lab report guidelines and post-lab questions are included.
GEM: Greener Education Materials for Chemists
This site is a resource for green chemistry principles and literature. It provides links for making green organic experiments and teaching the principles of green synthesis. Although it does not have many links specifically to chemical analysis, it provides an extensive overview and source of information regarding the important area of green chemistry.
Dual axis moment exchange inverted pendulum
Hardware demonstration and explanation of an inverted pendulum, stabilized by two independently controlled reaction wheels connected to DC motors. Made as part of a master's thesis at the System and Identification and Control Laboratory at the University of California, San Diego.
Virtual Textbook of Organic Chemistry
This virtual textbook allows for visualization of 3D-molecular models while teaching principles of Organic Chemistry.
Economic analysis of electric energy storage
This thesis presents a cost analysis of grid-connected electric energy storage. Various battery energy storage technologies are considered in the analysis. Life-cycle cost analysis is used. The results are presented in term of incremental cost of electricity stored and discharged, in US$/kWh,Thesis (M.S.)--Wichita State University, Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering.,"May 2006.",Includes bibliographic references (leaves 47-49)
Soil community analysis along a salt gradient using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of PCR-a
Many studies of hyper saline environments have been performed, mainly on aquatic systems. However, the microbial community in terrestrial thallasohaline environments has not been studied extensively. To our knowledge, this is the first study of a natural terrestrial thallasohaline environment using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). We studied the great salt plains (GSP) for this purpose. The GSP is a perfect example of an extreme environment. The
Reassessment of intra- and extra-ovarian expression of growth differentiation factor-9
Mammalian ovarian organogenesis is characterized temporally by oogonial mitosis, oogonial apoptosis, rescue of germ cells via interaction with somatic cells to form primordial follicles, and entrance into meiosis. Recent studies suggest that germ cell’s activity participate in this process via the production of local regulatory factors. Growth differentiation factor-9 (GDF-9), a novel transforming growth factor-family member, is expressed in ovaries of various species as a crucial factor in ov
Case It
This software can be used to investigate common molecular biology laboratory procedures using DNA or protein sequence data. These simulations and cases are based primarily on genetic and infectious disease with techniques such as: DNA electrophoresis, Southern blot, PCR, Multiplex PCR, Dot blot, ELISA, Western blot, 96-well PCR, protein electrophoresis.
Case It! is collaborative BioQUEST project between the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and Michigan State University.

I talked about Second Life in the chemistry classroom at the Chemical Heritage Foundation on April 29, 2008. This was part of the 8th Annual Leadership Initiative in Science Education (LISE 8). Most examples involve work done in collaboration with Andrew Lang. At the end I invite the group to an in-world meeting on May 6, 2008 at 13:30 EDT on ACS
These slides provides an overview of some of the properties of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and its applications in molecular biology. It gives an overview of the topology of DNA and how it can be exploited in PCR, restriction mapping and other molecular techniques.
The resource is used as a 50min lecture to first year undergradutes in the biosciences. It was created by Dr. Momna Hejmadi and the source file can be adapted for educational and non-commercial purposes only as licensed under the C
This course covers the principles of materials science and cell biology underlying the design of medical implants, artificial organs, and matrices for tissue engineering. Methods for biomaterials surface characterization and analysis of protein adsorption on biomaterials. Molecular and cellular interactions with biomaterials are analyzed in terms of unit cell processes, such as matrix synthesis, degradation, and contraction. Mechanisms underlying wound healing and tissue remodeling following imp
Regenerative medicine involves the repair and regeneration of tissues for therapeutic purposes, such as replacing bone marrow in leukemia, cartilage in osteoarthritis or cells of the heart after a heart attack. In this course, we will explore basic mechanisms of how cells differentiate into specific tissues in response to a variety of biologic signaling molecules. We will discuss the use of such factors for in vitro tissue production. We will also study the cellular mechanisms involved in the cl
In today’s society more and more digital data become available as a result of a variety of electronical, biochemical, medial, industrial and other sensing devices and communication systems (Internet, TV, PC, telecommunications). Examples of such data are audio and speech signals, digital images and video, text, and bio molecular data. To interact with machines that handle and process these volumes of data and to interact with the data itself, intelligent representation, processing, reasoning a
