Clinical trial shows IUD is best treatment for heavy periods
The hormone-releasing Mirena coil intrauterine device (IUD) is a better treatment for heavy menstrual periods than other conventional medical approaches, according to results of a major clinical trial led by scientists from the Universities of Nottingham and Birmingham. The findings of the ECLIPSE study, published online today (10 January 2012) in the New England Journal of Medicine, are widely expected to change standard clinical practice. Heavy periods, or menorrhagia, affect the lives of l
NOP - Sustainable organic teaching lab
Sustainable development needs chemical research Research and innovation are preconditions for the transformation of economic and social processes in favor of a sustainable development. Chemistry, the science and practice of the transformation of matter, is of central importance. Everyone dealing with chemistry can contribute substantially to sustainable development and holds special responsibility. Already in education the links between reactions and substances with the consumption of energy and
Effects of pictures, age and experience on learning to use a computer program
This study examines the effects of pictures of screen captures and input devices on documentation for older novices. There was no main effect of pictures, but there were statistically significant interactions between the type of picture and the factors of age and computer experience. As predicted, the most optimized designsthe ones presenting screen capturesmoderated the negative effects of age. We argue that screen captures help reduce two problems in the cognitive area that are especially
7.343 Protein Folding, Misfolding and Human Disease (MIT)
This course is one of many Advanced Undergraduate Seminars offered by the Biology Department at MIT. These seminars are tailored for students with an interest in using primary research literature to discuss and learn about current biological research in a highly interactive setting. The instructor for this course, Dr. Kosinski-Collins, is a member of the HHMI Education Group. Maintenance of the complex three-dimensional structure adopted by a protein in the cell is vital for function. Oftentimes

Assembly of Proteins in Membranes I from the course General Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
General Biochemistry and Molecular Biology - Fall 2006. This course covers molecular biology of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and their viruses. Mechanisms of DNA replication, transcription, translation. Structure of genes and chromosomes. Regulation of gene expression. Biochemical processes and principles in membrane structure and function, intracellular trafficking and subcellular compartmentation, cytoskeletal architecture, nucleocytoplasmic transport, signal transduction mechanisms, and c

Fuel Mystery Dis-Solved!
In this activity, students investigate the simulated use of solid rocket fuel by using an antacid tablet. Students observe the effect that surface area and temperature has on chemical reactions. Also, students compare the reaction time using two different reactants: water and vinegar. Finally, students report their results using a bar graph.
Using Molecular Weight
A previous tutorial shows how to calculate the molecular weight of a substance from the atomic weights given. On this page, we use the molecular weight to convert between the macroscopic scale (grams of a substance) and the microscopic scale (number of molecules of that substance).
You can access the problems below via the Load Homework dialogue in the File menu of the Virtual Lab. They have been organized by concept and ranked by difficulty (A ranking of 1 denotes an easier problem; 5 is more challenging). Word files for these problems are provided so that you may edit and distribute the assignments in your classroom. The following types of problems can be found: Determining the Heat of Reactions in Aqueous Solution, Coffee, Coolant, Camping, ATP Reaction (Thermochemistry
You probably remember the mole from high school chemistry, but do you remember why it is useful to chemists? The goal of the following video is to give the "big picture" of the mole and its applications; information on how to use the mole in calculations can be found in another tutorial. Throughout this course, we will use the term "molecular weight" to refer to the mass of a mole of a substance (for instance, the molecular weight of oxygen (O2) is 32 g/mol). Recent textbooks refer to this as "m
Reaction stoichiometry allows us to determine the amount of substance that is consumed or produced by a reaction. The following video considers the first part of this: how much of a reactant is consumed in a chemical reaction. Product formation is discussed elsewhere.
Product Formation and Percent Yield
In another tutorial, we considered the amount of reactant consumed by a chemical reaction. Here, we'll consider the amount of product formed by a reaction.
The Structures of Life
This site takes us into the world of structural biology -- a branch of molecular biology that focuses on the shape of nucleic acids and proteins (the molecules that do most of the work in our bodies). Learn about the structures and roles of proteins, tools used to study protein shapes, how proteins are used in designing new medications (for AIDS and arthritis), and what structural biology reveals about all life processes. Find out about careers in biomedical research.

Exploration of the Fundamentals of Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry
This thesis focuses on the study of different tools that can be used for preparing samples for matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOFMS) and utilizing these tools to study different ionization processes that
