Seasonal Migrations: Monarch Butterflies
Help track the monarch butterfly migration each fall and spring as the butterflies travel to and from Mexico. Report your own observations of migrating butterflies to this migration map. Through these interrelated investigations, students discover that sunlight drives all living systems and they learn about the dynamic ecosystem that surrounds and connects them. Guidelines, lessons, activities, reading connections, and interactive maps are included for each study.

Diffusion Across a Sheep Red Blood Cell Membrane
This cell membrane physiology laboratory uses sheep red blood cells to determine: (1) the isotonic and hemolytic molar concentrations of electrolytes and nonelectrolytes, and degree of electrolyte dissociation; (2) the diffusion rate of penetrating molecules of varying size and lipid solubility; and (3) the relationship of molecular size, number of hydroxyl groups, and partition coefficient to diffusion rate. Student research teams then design an experiment using the acquired techniques to deter

Practicum in Enterprise Security
In this course, students act as new employees (as enterprise security technicians) in a dynamic, rapidly growing, online real estate auction company called C-Bay. Their jobs, as members of a team of four technicians, is to solve real-life security problems at C-Bay. They are active learners, engaging in hands-on tasks such as analyzing C-Bay's security policy, assessing network problems, monitoring a network, responding to network attacks, educating users, and developing emergency response.

MacRetina
MacRetina simulates data from retinal ganglion cells in the eye to the brain. By sampling neural activity while stimulating the retina with small spots of light, students can see the dynamic excitatory and inhibitory responses of these neurons in the simulation, and map the organization of the retinal region that drives the cell's receptive field. MacRetina is modeled accurately on published data and is a realistic simulation of a lab experiment that would otherwise be beyond the reach of the
