DNA Build
Students reinforce their knowledge that DNA is the genetic material for all living things by modeling it using toothpicks and gumdrops that represent the four biochemicals (adenine, thiamine, guanine, and cytosine) that pair with each other in a specific pattern, making a double helix. They investigate specific DNA sequences that code for certain physical characteristics such as eye and hair color. Student teams trade DNA "strands" and de-code the genetic sequences to determine the physical char
String Telephones
In this activity, students investigate how sound travels through both string and air. First, they analyze the sound waves with a paper cup attached to a string. Then, they combine the string and cup with a partner to model a string telephone. Finally, they are given a design scenario to redesign the string telephone for distance. They think about their model as it compares a modern telephone and the impact the telephone has had on society.

"In the Shadow of Society": Migrant Workers and Unionists Urge Congress to Enact Effective Federal F
In the early 20th century, large-scale commercial agriculture displaced family farms, tenant farmers, and sharecroppers. The migratory experience left these workers--primarily Mexicans, Mexican Americans, African Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Filipinos÷permanent outsiders and vulnerable to exploitation,
The Bracero Program
The government-sponsored Bracero Program was the temporary importation of workers from Mexico to aid the American agricultural economy. In 1942, facing an extreme shortage of farm labor workers due to the war, Congress enacted the Emergency Labor Program. It approv

Life in the City
This fun Web site is part of OLogy, where kids can collect virtual trading cards and create projects with them. Here, they take a close-up look at biodiversity in a city park.
