Testing the performance of structural models in pricing credit spreads
Manuel Rodrigues outlines his research into financial models that are structurally driven by the Black-Scholes formula in order to determine equity pricing; and whether they under or over-produce credit risk. In order for firms to properly price credit risk, his research goes on to look at which market most efficiently tells us about fundamental increases in credit risk. Perhaps surprisingly, his work has demonstrated that the Equity market is the most efficient for identifying increased risk. T

Science Bulletins: Curiosity Lands on Mars
In early August 2012, the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover was safely delivered to its Mars landing site in Gale Crater. In addition to the rover's science instrument payload for atmosphere and soil analysis, Curiosity carries 17 cameras that are capturing the Martian landscape in unprecedented detail. Scientists anticipate that the geological diversity of the landing site and nearby areas will yield a rich variety of samples, informing their understanding of Mars's past and present habit

On April 20, 1980, the Castro regime announces that all Cubans wishing to emigrate to the U.S. are free to board boats at the port of Mariel west of Havana, launching the Mariel Boatlift. The first of 125,000 Cuban refugees from Mariel reached Florida the next day. (1:00)
