Shape explorer
This Java applet is designed to allow students to practice visualizing and calculating area and perimeter for figures formed by adjacent squares on a grid. After the student selects a size using a slide bar, the Java applet generates a random closed figure. The student enters values for the figure's area and perimeter, which are checked automatically. The applet limits figures to rectangles and generates two column comparisons of areas and perimeters for multiple figures. From the activity page,
Better buses
How can city buses be made to run more quietly and produce less pollution? This article, part of a series about the future of energy, discusses the use of hydrogen-powered buses in Chicago and Vancouver. Students read about plans to place hydrogen-powered buses in six of the world's smoggiest cities and the potential for reduced air pollution. Copyright 2005 Eisenhower National Clearinghouse
Create a Graph
Students will learn how to create area, bar, pie, and line graphs. They are provided with information about what each type of graph shows and what it can be used for. Students are given an example of each type of graph, but they can create graphs using their own data in the interactive tool.
Box model (grades 6-8)
This virtual manipulative enables the student to randomly generate data that is displayed on a chart. The chart shows the results of a simulated drawing with replacement from a set of numbers selected by the student. The manipulative can be used to simulate flipping a coin or tossing a die. A pause button stops the simulation. A button for showing theoretical probability places an outline on the theoretical probabilities chart, which allows the student to compare the theoretical and experimental
University of Iowa : burn oat hulls for economic, environmental benefit
What is an alternative energy source that is available today? This article, part of a series about the future of energy, introduces students to a pilot project of burning oat hulls at the University of Iowa power plant. Students read that the burning of oak hulls instead of coal provides for cleaner air and additional space in landfills. Copyright 2005 Eisenhower National Clearinghouse
2.3 What does relationship mean in systematics? G.G. Simpson
This unit is concerned with macroevolution – the patterns and processes of evolution above the species level. A crucial consideration in macroevolutionary studies is that of the evolutionary relationships (phylogeny) of the organisms in question. The unit begins with an introduction to the scope of macroevolutionary studies and illustrates methods of reconstructing phylogeny, from both morphological and molecular data.

This Week @Minnesota: Spring fashion, robots & "Support the U"
In "This Week @Minnesota" for March 28 through April 1, we enlist the help of U of M junior Courtney to ask students about their spring fashion trends, check out a robotics competition on campus and help "Support the U" in a new advocacy effort.
This week's video also contains a hidden contest -- if you can name the time and place where Goldy Gopher appears (be sharp, it happens fast!), write us a comment below and we'll enter your name in a drawing for a new piece of Golden Gopher apparel!

Prehistoric Picture Project
The Prehistoric Picture Project uses animation to make the pictures come to life, and also to help us understood just how they worked as graphics in prehistoric times.
This animation is based on Iron Age figures, dating from the last centuries BC, engraved into open-air rock slabs at Foppe di Nadro, Valcamonica, in the Italian Alps.
Here the pictures are made by hammering little peck-marks into the smooth natural rock surface. We call them 'pexils'. When we work digitally they become pixels.
Emerging markets and the upturn 7.5.1 Evaluate information from different sources Be critically aware of the reliability and quality of information from different sources, taking into account factors such as commercial, political, academic or personal interests that may influence selection, content and presentation. How will you judge the quality of the information you find? You may need to question the validity of statistical information and the way data have been chosen. The size of a survey sample, for example, may be insufficient to support claims of general tren Coursecasting in the Chemistry Classroom... In this lesson, students continue their education on cells in the human body. They discuss stem cells and how engineers are involved in the research of stem cell behavior. They learn about possible applications of stem cell research and associated technologies, such as fluorescent dyes for tracking the replication of specific cells.
