The Early Years Transition and Special Educational Needs (EYTSEN) research builds on the work of the Effective Provision of Pre-School Education (EPPE) project, a major longitudinal study of a national sample of young children's progress and development through pre-school and into primary school until the end of Key Stage 1 (age 3+ to 7 years) (Sylva et al 1999). The Department for Education & Skills (DfES) funds both the EPPE and EYTSEN research. The EYTSEN study focuses on special education

Adhesion of protective coating appliques on contaminated aluminum surfaces
The goal of this research was to develop an appliqué system to protect an aluminum surface previously coated with a RTV silicone rubber. The appliqué consisted of a poly (urethane) - based film coated with a suitable adhesive. Two adhesion problems were studied in this project: 1) adhesion to the contaminated aluminum surface, and 2) adhesion to the protective film of the appliqué.
Adhesion can occur according to several mechanisms: physical adsorption, chemical bonding, diffusion, elec
Gender Education and Training in Doctoral Level Psychology Programs: An Exploratory Investigation
This doctoral project was an exploratory investigation of the treatment of gender
in the education and training of doctoral level psychology graduate students. Fifty-one
doctoral level psychology programs, including Ph.D., Psy.D. and Ed.D. programs, were
placed into one of three groups based on their orientation, practitioner-oriented program
(P-OP), clinical research-oriented program (CR-OP), or combined orientation program

Preparing Future Leaders: Principals’ Perceptions of the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Conso
Recent high-stakes accountability movements in education have significantly changed the role of the school principal. As the incongruence between principal preparation programs and successful principalships becomes more apparent, it is imperative that principal preparation programs evolve to meet the complex needs of today’s principalship and prepare leaders for tomorrow’s schools. This dissertation study explored the standards-based changes in principal preparation programs in Pennsylvania
The Effect of Active Learning Exercises on Academic Performance and Nonintellectual Learning Factors
The current study examined the effect of an active learning-based teaching method on nonintellectual learning dispositions in students enrolled in general psychology. Expected outcomes included improvement in student nonintellectual learning factors, as well as improvement in student academic performance. Two graduate student instructors and four courses of general psychology were recruited for participation. SAT scores, course grades, student ratings of teachers, and measures of nonintellectual
A Study of the Prereferral Intervention Process in Pennsylvania Following the Rescinding of the Inst
The increasing demand for special education services has been identified as a
major contributor to the rising cost of education, and frequently students are erroneously identified as requiring special education services when their needs could be adequately addressed in the regular education classroom. The prereferral intervention process has been proposed as an alternative to the traditional refer-test-place process of identifying special education students because struggling students receive ex
The Effects of Semantic and Thematic Clustering on Learning English Vocabulary by Saudi Students
The present study aimed to compare the effects of semantic and thematic clustering on learning English vocabulary by Saudi students. It investigated whether thematic grouping or the use of meaningful context facilitates vocabulary learning. It was also conducted to shed light on how the use of context might be combined with clustering in order to facilitate learning.
The study consisted of two parts. In the first part, the quantitative stage, 160 participants studied four lists of English words
Parenting Education for Low-Income Parents of Preschoolers: What is the Most Effective Approach?
Parent education programs have been found to be effective interventions for lower-socioeconomic families. (Baydar, Reid, & Webster-Stratton, 2002). Although research has reliably reported that any parent training is better than no parent training (Helm & Kozloff, 1986), the effectiveness of group parent education programs which emphasize relational improvement is largely unknown. The present study attempted to address this question by comparing archival data collected between the years 1999 and
Judging the Hate Crime Victim: Law School Student Perceptions and the Effects of Individual and law
The present study examines the effects of individual and law school factors on the
perceptions of African-American, gay, and lesbian hate crime victims for 283 law school
students from two schools in western Pennsylvania. Although research on the perceptions
of hate crimes and hate crime victims has increased over the last decade, research has
neglected to focus on this particular population of students. This population is important
because many of these law students will seek roles in the crimi
