Samantha Luois: Undergraduate Biology Research Program
Samantha Luois' project was "Submicron Decalflourobutane Phase-Change Contrast Agents Generated By Microbubble Condensation."
The University of Arizona's Undergraduate Biology Research Program (UBRP) is an educational program designed to teach students science by involving them in biologically related research. Students are paid for their time in the lab where they develop an understanding of scientific method and receive a realistic view of biological research. They also acquire the tools nece

Dust Explosion (Interactive)
In these videos adapted from the Journal of Chemical Education, learn about the dangers of grain elevators and observe the combustion of lycopodium powder. The demonstrator places fine particles of lycopodium powder into a funnel inside a container that also holds a lit candle. Air is forced through the funnel, causing the powder to disperse within the container, and then resulting in an explosive chemical reaction. This demonstration illustrates the hazard of dust explosions—specifically,

In this interactive resource adapted from the Dolan DNA Learning Center, learn about DNA libraries, the tools scientists use to store and reproduce genetic information that they can later access for their research. The interactive resource features five different types of DNA libraries. Each gets its name from the type of molecule or organism used to host DNA segments of varying lengths.
In this interactive activity adapted from the University of Nebraska's Plant and Soil Science eLibrary, learn how DNA is extracted from leaf tissue for molecular techniques, such as PCR. As the animated sequence shows, DNA extraction involves collecting cells, physically breaking them open to release DNA from the nuclei, separating the DNA from other cellular components, and precipitating DNA out of solution for final extraction. The process utilizes basic laboratory tools, such as microfuge tub
