Planck and Herschel, a pair of satellites launched in 2009, are examining the sky in tandem to solve some of our biggest cosmological mysteries. Using detectors that read far-infrared light, both satellites are now scanning dust in the Milky Way Galaxy. The do so at different scales. Planck captures large swathes of the sky, while Herschel narrows in on smaller regions at slightly different wavelengths.
