Tools for Teaching Ecology and Evolution
A series of learning objects, based around the Virtual Rocky Shore resource at http://open.jorum.ac.uk:80/xmlui/handle/123456789/2729 . These include web based instructions on experimental design, a PDF and web based resources for statistics, video tutorials for data presentation in Microsoft Excel (2007), simulations of grazing on rocky shores, a capture-mark-recapture simulation for estimating population sizes and a series of Scilab simulations for teaching physiology, evolution, popu
Genetic Analysis - Images
The Genetic Analysis SBLi is a set of scenarios designed to support an undergraduate course in Genetics. In the scenarios the student plays the role of a genetics researcher, and performs simulated experiments to reinforce concepts taught in lectures. This project is part of the the Higher Education Academy's UK Centre for Bioscience Open Educational Resources programme. This package contains images used within the Scenarios.
Intracellular Transport
A chapter which describes the pathways and mechanisms of vesicular traffic between different cellular compartments. It also includes a basic description of the cytoskeleton, and its role in intracellular transport. The unit contains 45 figures and is intended as ~7 hours study at level 2/3. It also provides background reading for the experimental investigation 'Immuno-electron Microscopy' (http://open.jorum.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/1580).
Virtual laboratories in Molecular and Cell Biology - Immuno-electron-microscopy
A virtual laboratory that includes immuno-gold labelling and transmission electron micrography (immuno-EM). It allows the student to study intracellular-traffic pathways of two cell-surface receptor molecules, following stimulation of the cells with their specific ligand, for different time periods. The programme first introduces the theory underlying the techniques and includes a video of EM work in a real laboratory. The student is then taken through a series of questions which requires them t
Virtual laboratories in Molecular and Cell Biology - SDS-PAGE
A protein analysis laboratory using SDS-PAGE, western-blotting and endoprotease digestion. The programme includes a section on the theory of the techniques, a video demonstration in a real laboratory, and a series of questions which guide the students through the structural analysis of model proteins (3 are included). Students go to the virtual laboratory and devise their own experiments in order to determine the molecular weight, subunit composition etc of the proteins. Results (gels and blots)

This is a presentation about selecting columns and beams (HNC In Engineering – Mechanical Science Edexcel HN Unit: Engineering Science (NQF L4)). The key terminology and calculations are explored by use of a simple example. Extracts of column tables are used to extract key variables. The tables used are extracted from standard construction engineering data sheets.

This is a document transcript for Macaulay’s Method & Poisson’s Ratio (Edexcel HN unit – Mechanical Principles (NQF L4)). It examines a method of analysing the bending moment and shear force distribution along a uniformly loaded, simply supported beam. The method used is Macaulay’s and the stages involved in this method are described in detail. The method also determines the position of the maximum bending moment, the slope and deflection at this point. Poisson’s ratio is the ratio bet
