The Modern Commonwealth: challenges in the 21st century
On the eve of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala at end-November 2007, Secretary-General Don McKinnon will set the 53-nation family of nations in the context of the challenges facing a fast-changing, interdependent world - above all in entrenching a genuine culture of democracy and in bringing the benefits of economic and social development to the world's poor, with 800 million Commonwealth citizens living in official poverty.
Howard Davies in Conversation with Lord Goldsmith QC
The separation of powers idea is at the heart of all legal democracies. Yet within those democracies there will often be positions of high office which require their holders to perform functions which are both legal and political. In this series of events senior figures who hold or have held positions of this type talk about their lives in the law, the nature of their office, the institutions which they serve, their roles and responsibilities within those institutions, the role of lawyers in gov
The First Legacy Games: the physical and socio-economic transformation of East London
(Editors note: Unfortunately the last few minutes of the question and answer session are missing from the podcast) This event explores the planning and physical development of the Olympic Park after the 2012 games as well as the wider socio-economic benefits the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are bringing. Andrew Altman is chief executive of the Olympic Park Legacy Company. Paul Brickell is executive member for Olympics and public affairs at Newham council and chief executive of Leaside Regen
Introduction to Project Management
This module is the introduction to the University Extension online course, Introduction to Project Management. Project management has been proven to be the most effective method of delivering products within cost, schedule, and resource constraints. This intensive and hands-on course gives you the skills to ensure your projects are completed on time and on budget while giving the user the product they expect. You will gain a strong working knowledge of the basics of project management and be abl
SIMULACRO ARQUITECT?NICO AL ALCANCE DE LAS MANOS (Architectonic Simulacrum within Reach)
Since middle ?90?s, the outbreak of 3d hardware acceleration devices for PC software, has facilitated a great evolvement in what is known as ?Role Play Games? (RPG) ? within the entertainment software industry. This development has produced such a phenomenon that surpassed all expectations. Through the game ?engine? tools, virtual spaces can be achieved according to an editor?s criterium. Thus, a varied range of uses in different research fields are permitted. It is possible to build architectur
High magnification SEM image of open cell polyurethane foam
If a gas is injected into a liquid it forms a cellular foam structure. When a thermoset prepolymer of low viscosity is foamed, the polymer can drain from the cell walls (driven by surface tension) before it sets at the cell edges, leaving an open-celled foam. The cell edges have three concave sides, and some remnants of collapsed cell walls can be seen at the cell edges.
CAAD Education and Post-Graduate Opportunities (At Mimar Sinan University)
This paper addresses new design teaching strategies at an important and traditional university in Istanbul, founded as the Academy of Fine Arts 110 years ago. It will include a short review of design education before the Academy changed into a university, and a description of the present situation with regard to computers. Nearly two years ago, CAAD education was introduced as an elective subject. The students show great interest in CAD; most Turkish architects now work with computers and CAAD g

This paper reports on current research in the field of architectural design and knowledge- based systems, through the conception and implementation of two software tools operating as a part of an integrated hypermedia environment denominated PatriArch. Main concern of this set of tools operating in PatriArch is the support of design since the very beginning, in that phase of not yet correctly explored or interpretated constraints and of scarcely specified goals, in which an initial solution mode
In this paper, definitions of collaborative design are discussed and understood in terms of a designer?s cognitive collaborations to explore his/her experiential memory for remote idea associations. Based on Schon?s reflective practice theory, Valkenburg and Dorst?s (1998) description of collaborative team designing is adopted as a model for a proposed design conversation system. The design conversation system is aimed at triggering the experiential memory of the designer by associating signific
Although the processing route is complicated and the product expensive, there is a high degree of control over the cell structure of such foams and the final shape can be controlled to meet near-net-shape requirements.
Additions such as SiC are made to molten aluminium or aluminium alloy to modify the melt viscosity and make it suitable for foaming. Calcium carbonate is then added to the melt which is solidified to form a precursor which can be foamed in a controlled manner by a subsequent heat treatment. The resulting foam has a fine and relatively uniform cell structure.
The multimedia offers an integration that must be made by the subject with the stimuli given, in their majority visual. For that reason it is interesting to know how effective may be the use of images and to propose some basic norms for designing multimedia software based on a graphic syntax
If a gas is injected into a liquid it forms a cellular foam structure. When a thermoset prepolymer of low viscosity is foamed, the polymer can drain from the cell walls (driven by surface tension) before it sets at the cell edges, leaving an open-celled foam. The cell edges have three concave sides, giving rise to the tri-cuspid cross section visible at the bottom of this image. The average co-ordination number for the nodes (where struts meet) is four, giving tetrahedral junctions.
The European Architectural Endoscopy Association was established in connection with the Association?s first international conference on August 25-28, 1993, which was hosted by the Department of Architecture at the Tampere University of Technology. The purpose of the EAEA is to promote experimentation, research, communication, exchange of experiences, collaboration, user participation and teaching in the field of endoscopy and environmental simulation. The first EAEA conference was attended by 25
This secondary electron SEM image shows the cementite delineating prior austenite grain boundaries with a thin layer. The amount of proeutectoid phase is very low, with the majority of the area being taken by the pearlite eutectoid. Again each pearlite cell has a different orientation with the ferrite phase being selectively etched.
Items in nature, such as twigs and leaves, can show bite and chew marks where animals have been eating off of plants. Animals make trails by traveling over the same area several times to get to a destination.
This red algal cell (Chlamydomonas nivalis) gives mountain snow packs a red tint. It uses the pollutants in snow as food. It cannot be seen without a microscope.
