Mentoring, observation and interviews are three important strategies in developing student teachers. This unit, which gives a flavour of the Open University's flexible PGCE course, introduces student–teacher centred strategies both inside and outside of the classroom involving mentors, pupils, tutors and others to develop student teachers' professional skills and understanding.

This research and development project report finds that data from one PGCE course indicates a great potential in electronic communication to deliver a flexible PGCE route but that it is expensive to deliver. Integration of full time and flexible routes is suggested as a cost effective solution. Supported by a TDA Research and Development Award (R&DA).

Transferring a model for improving the ability of design & technology PGCE trainee teachers to teach
This project concerned trainees’ ability to teach designing. An earlier study fully reported elsewhere found that a curriculum intervention in the training programme enhanced PGCE students’ ability to teach designing. This project examined how mentors contribute to the development of beginning teachers’ subject specific knowledge. The focus was on ‘explaining’ in science teaching.
The researchers found that written feedback on its own was of limited use but it was in discussion that the more helpful advice arose. Mentors’ descriptive and evaluative statements did not, by themselves, help whereas focused suggestions with justifications were more helpful to beginning teachers.

Perceptions of Masters level PGCE
This research paper was presented at the 2008 British Educational Research Association (BERA) annual conference. It reports the initial findings of a pilot research study funded by the Education Subject Centre of the Higher Education Academy (ESCalate) which sought to track the progress and effect of PGCE/M level provision in England, through investigating the opinions of a range of stakeholders in relation to the perceived benefits of the Masters level component of this qualification.
