Veterans' Cooperative Grocery Store, April 1946. Photo no. 4.
World War II veterans attending Alabama Polytechnic Institute were often married and sometimes had children. To counter high post-WWII prices in Auburn, Ala., the veterans formed a food cooperative, which resembled a small country grocery store. Per the Alumnews, prices averaged 30% less than in local stores. [Individuals in this photograph are not identified. Is Proton Therapy Treatment Optimal for Childhood Cancer?
MD Anderson Proton Therapy Center physician Dr. David Grosshans talks about the importance of proton therapy radiation for childhood cancer. After sharing the difference in traditional IMRT radiation and proton therapy, he discusses why proton therapy is optimal for children, how children tolerate proton therapy, preliminary outcomes for children treated with proton therapy, and the importance of having a comprehensive and dedicated team devoted to treating children with this form of radiation.
Study Shows Importance of Proton Therapy for Childhood Cancer
Dr. David Grosshans discusses a recent study that shows how proton therapy spares healthy tissue in children with cancer. The study illustrates how proton therapy radiation is able to avoid excess radiation dose to a variety of normal structures while maintaining equal target coverage. This is important for childhood cancers because excess radiation can cause damage to the hippocampus, an area involved in learning and memory.

Carbon Cycles
Students are introduced to the concept of energy cycles by learning about the carbon cycle. They will learn how carbon atoms travel through the geological (ancient) carbon cycle and the biological/physical carbon cycle. Students will consider how human activities have disturbed the carbon cycle by emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. They will discuss how engineers and scientists are working to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Lastly, students will consider how they can help the world th
Mixtures and Solutions
This unit covers introductory concepts of mixtures and solutions. Students think about how mixtures and solutions, and atoms and molecules can influence new technologies developed by engineers. The first lesson explores the fundamentals of atoms and their structure. The building blocks of matter (protons, electrons, neutrons) are covered in detail. The next lesson examines the properties of elements and the periodic table one method of organization for the elements. The concepts of physical and
How Good Is Your Hearing?
Students learn about the frequency range of human hearing by collecting data from a website simulation. They analyze the data to determine the typical range for students in their classroom. Students participate in a collaborative effort to gather scientific data on humans for use in designing an engineering product.
