3.3.1 Summary

  • Claims about who is poor are rooted in shared and contested ideas about the basic necessities of life.

  • The experience of poverty is both relative and relational. It is defined by what people have, and what they can do, relative to the opportunities of others.

  • Poverty carries derogatory meanings, so it does not easily provide a basis for collective identity.

Mas or

Service with a smile
Research by Professor Martin Kilduff reveals that managers who help employees to deal with negative emotions feel their actions are 'extra-role behaviour' above-and-beyond their managerial duties. Employees, he says, do not expect any reciprocation, but managers on the other hand, expect personal commitment in return and that, Professor Kilduff warns, could lead to problems.

1.3.4 Diagrams for connectivity

Relationship diagrams offer one way of putting more order into your understanding of a situation. Each element of a situation is named in an oval and lines between ovals indicate that there are relationships between the particular elements – but no more than this!

Systems maps are another way of developing one's understanding of a situation. Systems maps are essentially ‘structure’ diagrams. Each element or sub-system is contained in a circle or oval and a line

1.3.2 Systems diagrams and diagrams helpful for systems work

Diagrams are used extensively in systems thinking and practice. All of those types included in the animated tutorial, as well as other types not covered there, can or have been used in systems studies. As mentioned at the beginning of the unit the use of diagrams is very personal. For instance I find it helpful to group diagrams into three sorts depending on when they are to be used:

1.3.1 Systems thinking and concept

Much can be said about systems thinking. However it is worth reiterating some key points here as they are central to understanding the purpose of the diagrams discussed later in this section.

The word system is one that is in regular everyday use. People talk, for example, about ‘the social security system’ and the ‘telephone system’. Gamblers boast about ‘having a system’ for winning at roulette. Young people talk about being ‘against the system’.
