Literature Review in Thinking Skills, Technology and Learning
The purpose of this report is: • to clarify what is meant by thinking skills and their relationship to technology • to identify the role of ICT in promoting thinking skills • to produce guidelines for the development of digital learning resources to support the teaching and learning of thinking skills • to evaluate the general direction of research in this area and how this should inform educational practice. The use of new technologies is often linked to the development of thinking sk
1 Learning to learn
How do we learn? Understanding ‘how’ is the key to learning more effectively. This unit looks at the three main categories of theories: the acquisitive, constructivist and experiential models of learning. There is no right way to learn but developing an active approach will ensure that you are open to new ideas.
2.1 Using poetry: exercise
In this unit we will consider how language can be used in different ways for different purposes. To do this we will use the theme of memorial and commemoration. In the first section we briefly discuss the life of the poet Siegfried Sassoon before examining both his poetry and prose. Through this we will see how he conveys meaning in different ways for different audiences using different forms. Following this we discuss more generally how different meanings can be conveyed using prose and poetic

9.8 Debate 5: the novel today
Sunset Song was written in the early 1930s and is still one of the best-known and most-debated Scottish novels. In this unit, we discuss whether Sunset Song succeeds as critique of capitalism and whether it has value as a work of literature separate from its propagandistic ambitions.
9.7 Debate 4: representation of Scotland
Sunset Song was written in the early 1930s and is still one of the best-known and most-debated Scottish novels. In this unit, we discuss whether Sunset Song succeeds as critique of capitalism and whether it has value as a work of literature separate from its propagandistic ambitions.
9.4 Debate 1: use of female protagonist
Sunset Song was written in the early 1930s and is still one of the best-known and most-debated Scottish novels. In this unit, we discuss whether Sunset Song succeeds as critique of capitalism and whether it has value as a work of literature separate from its propagandistic ambitions.

The House of Affects Project
The House of Affects is an experimental installation to be part of the PerFormaSpace project pursued at the University of Cambridge, UK (DIGIS) and Goldsmiths College London, U.C.L. (Digital Studios), currently partially funded by Arts&Business East 2006, in collaboration with Econavate, UK who will provide their technical expertise in fabrication using recycled materials. This paper presents project-specific information and theoretical discussion on the design process and the computational meth
Nematic liquid crystalline polymer
Liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) exhibit a mesophase above their melting temperature. In this phase, they are fluid yet they retain long-range orientational order. The self-alignment of crystallites manifests itself as patterns of optical birefringence when the liquids are viewed between crossed polars. Defects in the patterns are analogous to dislocations in crystal systems. This specimen is K24 (4-cyano-4'-8-alkylbiphenyl), which is nematic above 35 degrees C. The general gradation of c
Shear bands in stressed polycarbonate
Yielding in glassy polymers often proceeds by a small sheared region propagating through the material. These patterns can be used in the stress analysis of fracture processes. In addition, the colours in the image are the result of birefringence and relate to the strain-induced alignment of the polycarbonate molecules. Because the specimen is below the glass transition temperature of PC (145 °C), the material will relax when the stress is removed and there will be no residual alignment.
Cambodian stampede death toll rises
Relatives identify loved ones who died in a stampede at a Cambodian festival that killed over 450 people, while the city begins the clean up of the site.

Responding to Water Scarcity
Growers in the UK are having to get used to managing with less water. Changing climate patterns mean that techniques long established in Southern Europe are now being adapted for use further north.
Dr Jim Monaghan (Harper Adams University College) is leading research at Warwick HRI on Dynamic Fertigation, an irrigation system that not only saves water and fertilizer but also automatically respond to five day weather forecasts.

Our research team has developed and experimented software for the learning of algebra, named Aplusix, with the idea of being usable and useful for all the classes having access to computers, and of helping teachers to teach the curriculum. In this paper, we list 19 principles that we consider relevant to this goal and we briefly describe the Aplusix system. This system is distributed in France since early 2005 and will be distributed in many countries from 2006. It has proven to be efficient (st
Support Turf Work
This resource covers the process of supporting turf work under supervision. It requires the ability to prepare materials, tools and equipment for turf work, undertake turf work, handle materials and equipment, and clean up on completion of work. Supporting turf work requires knowledge of safe work practices, mowing patterns and heights, turf machinery and equipment, and maintenance practices. It contains activities and resources to facilitate self-paced learning.
