Models improve our abilities to make accurate forecasts. They help us make better decisions and adopt more effective strategies. They even can improve our ability to design institutions and procedures. In this class, students will be presented with a starter kit of models: starting with models of tipping points. Then moving on to cover models explai

Giant Silkmoth Emerges/Expands Wings Realtime/Timelapse
Here we see the original raw footage in both realtime and timelapse. A male Euryalus SIlkmoth (Hyalophora euryalus) struggles out of his cocoon, and then expands his wings. This moth species typically has a wingspan of about 4-5 inches across from wingtip-to-wingtip, and is sometimes mistaken for a bat or small bird when encountered flying at night. What a great resource to help build background knowledge and to help make real world connections between nature and the classroom. (2:11)

Investigating the Diversity of Parasitic Protozoa Using Gregarine Parasites of Invertebrates
Gregarines are members of the Phylum Apicomplexa that parasitize invertebrates. All of the Apicomplexans are parasitic and include some of medical and veterinary importance (e.g., malaria). Gergarines may be safely studied in highly parasizited hosts such as earthworms and mealworms that are readily available from bait shops and pet stores. Various life cycle stages are easily visible under the dissecting microscope in student laboratories.
In this activity, students will learn how to read a topographical map and how to triangulate with just a map. True triangulation requires both a map and compass, but to simplify the activity and make it possible indoors, the compass information is given. Students will practice converting a compass measurement to a protractor measurement, as well as reverse a bearing direction (i.e., if they know a tree’s bearing is 100 degrees from you, they can determine what bearing they are from the tree).
