Before photography was invented there was the camera obscura, useful for studying the sun, as an aid to artists, and for general entertainment. What is a camera obscura and how does it work ???
Exercise Physiology: The Response of Metabolic Rate to Physical Activity
In this lab, students measure their heart rate, oxygen consumption, and carbon dioxide production in various physical activities on a treadmill or cycle ergometer. After learning the techniques in the first lab period, each group of 3-4 students designs an independent investigation that is performed during the second lab period. To measure metabolic rate, students collect expired air in a Douglas bag, then measure the volume, the temperature, and the concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide. W
Blood flow of moving Lumbriculus
Observe blood flow and muscle contractions in each body segment of Lumbriculus variegates (note how blood flows in relation to the worm turning in the capillary tube).
Glidden's Patent Application for Barbed Wire
This lesson presents the drawing and description that helped Joseph Glidden, a farmer from De Kalb, Illinois, win a patent for barbed wire in 1874. Objects appear to be certain colors because of reflection and absorbance. Light is made up of different wavelengths that our eyes detect and convert into colors. The apple looks green because it reflects the wavelengths that correspond to the color we see as green. The apple absorbs all other wavelengths of light.
"Quasi-Balanced Circulations in Oceans and Atmospheres, Fall 2009"
" This course introduces the students to dynamics of large-scale circulations in oceans and atmospheres. Basic concepts include mass and momentum conservation, hydrostatic and geostrophic balance, and pressure and other vertical coordinates. It covers the topics of fundamental conservation and balance principles for large-scale flow, generation and dissipation of quasi-balanced eddies, as well as equilibrated quasi-balanced systems. Examples of oceanic and atmospheric quasi-balanced flows, compu
