Theodore Roosevelt was a great lover of nature long before he became president. From boyhood throughout his adult life, Roosevelt's enthusiasm for conservation was encouraged and shaped by several influential figures. Early on, TR's uncle, Robert Barnwell Roosevelt inspired his nephew with his tireless struggles on behalf of conservation policy. The Grand Army of the Republic was an organization of Civil War veterans who had served in the Union Army. The G.A.R. had significant political clout nationwide. Between 1868–1908, no Republican was nominated to the presidency without G.A.R. endorsement. Located in Hammond, at I-80/94 and Kennedy Avenue, a major thoroughfare in Northern Indiana, the Welcome Center houses an exhibit hall and the John Dillinger Museum. The design encompasses images of the South Shore: stainless steel “waves” of Lake Michigan; concrete “sand dunes;” steel, to represent the industry; farms and the Kankakee River.,Use of this image is restricted to projects related to Destination Indiana.,Lake County Journey
