This course covers transport processes of mass, momentum, and energy from a macroscopic view with emphasis both on understanding why matter behaves as it does and on developing practical problem solving skills. The course is divided into four parts: introduction, conduction, convection, and radiation.
Lynxes have a dynamic predator-prey relationship with the hare, or rabbits. This relationship is cyclic. The hare population size increases every ten years or so because there is an abundance of vegetation. Shortly after, the lynx population increases because there are more hares to eat. Once the hares have eaten all the available vegetation, their population crashes because there is nothing to eat. The lynx population crashes shortly after that because there aren't enough hares around to eat.
This course explores the history of information and associated technologies, uncovering why we think of ours as 'the information age.' We will select moments in the evolution of production, recording, and storage from the earliest writing systems to the world of Short Message Service (SMS) and blogs. In every instance, we'll be concerned with both what and when and how and why, and we will keep returning to the question of technological determinism: how do technological developments affect socie
