Millions of veterans were suddenly looking for jobs at a time when industry was reeling from the cancellation of billions of dollars in war contracts. In addition, shortages of consumer goods that were not produced during the war created high prices and inflation. The cost of living doubled from 1913 to 1920, causing great distress for many Americans.
