Water Power
Students observe a model waterwheel to investigate the transformations of energy involved in turning the blades of a hydro-turbine. Students work as engineers to create model waterwheels while considering resources such as time and materials, in their design. Students also discuss and explore the characteristics of hydropower plants.
Wind Power
In this activity, students develop an understanding of how engineers use wind to generate electricity. They will build a model anemometer to better understand and measure wind speed.
Solar Power
In this activity, students learn how engineers use solar energy to heat buildings by investigating the thermal storage properties of some common materials: sand, salt, water and shredded paper. Students then evaluate the usefulness of each material as a thermal storage material to be used as the thermal mass in a passive solar building.
International Multilateral Negotiation
The seminar focuses on negotiated decision-making in multilateral settings. It will survey process issues such as: the differences between bilateral and multilateral negotiations, the particular problems of negotiations involving a very large number of parties, the complexities of issue-linkage, managed negotiation processes, the role of coalitions, conference diplomacy, treaty negotiations, knowledge in negotiation, etc. These topics will be discussed in the context of case studies dealing with

Power, Work and the Waterwheel
Waterwheels are devices that generate power and do work. Students construct a waterwheel using two-liter bottles, dowel rods and index cards, and calculate the power created and work done by them.
Potato Power
Students use potatoes to light an LED clock (or light bulb) as they learn how a battery works in a simple circuit and how chemical energy changes to electrical energy. As they learn more about electrical energy, they better understand the concepts of voltage, current and resistance.
Wind Power!
Students learn how engineers transform wind energy into electrical energy by building their own miniature wind turbines and measuring the electrical current it produces. They explore how design and position affect the electrical energy production.
Power to the People
Students read and evaluate descriptions of how people live “off the grid” using solar power and come to understand better the degree to which that lifestyle is or is not truly independent of technological, economic and cultural infrastructure and resources. In the process, students develop a deeper appreciation of the meaning of “community” and the need for human connection. This activity is geared towards fifth-grade and older students and Internet research capabilities are required. Po

The rise of international environmental law: a Canadian perspective
Presentation and discussion with Paul Cassidy, senior partner in the national law firm of Blake, Cassels & Graydon's Environmental Law Group in Vancouver.
September 16, 2010
Although increasing worries about climate change and water and air quality concerns around the world seem to make political borders irrelevant, environmental laws in Canada and elsewhere have traditionally had a distinct domestic flavour, focusing on purely locals aspects of these issues. However, recent experiences with tr
Staying Power: Six Enduring Principles for Managing Strategy & Innovation in an Uncertain World
This is an overview of Professor Cusumano's new book Staying Power: Six Enduring Principles for Managing Strategy and Innovation in an Uncertain World|, prepared for the 2009 Oxford Clarendon Lectures in Management Studies. The focus is on how managers can tackle the simultaneous challenge of "innovation and commoditization" in markets often subject to unpredictable change and disruption. Professor Cusumano positions each principle against other concepts associated with 'best practices' and comp

Patients and Populations: Medical Decision-Making Power of the Pen What is a power series?
Students will create petitions addressing their biggest concern relating to tobacco globally.
This is an introduction to power series, how to calculate them and how to find their radius of convergence. Many examples are presented to illustrate the ideas. These concepts are seen in university mathematics.
