M&A Is Back -- But This Time, It's Different
If the past month is any indicator, acquisitions are not only thawing but heating up. In October, Comcast made a bid to merge its operations with NBC Universal to create a cable programming giant. In early November, Kraft Foods announced a $16.5 billion bid for U.K.-based chocolate maker Cadbury -- also being sought by confectioners Hershey and Ferrero. The activity spans several sectors, including technology, with Hewlett Packard's agreement to purchase 3Com for $2.7 billion, and Google's $750

The global campus-ICT and the future of universities
This paper analyses the changes which the ICT causes on a global scale. The globalization of higher education triggered by e-Learning,
the emergence of e-infrastructure for e-science, the Open Educational Resources
movement, e-libraries and the tendency of building global educational alliances are analysed as well. Special emphasis is put on several wellknown university models, e.g. Research University, Open University and
Entrepreneurial University, as well as on some emerging university models
Patricia Johnston Sings "I See the Sun"
This beautifully done video sings about the sun, moon, stars, ...Some of the lyrics include "I see the sun-a big round sun. I see the moon-a big round moon. I see the stars-the little, little stars---smiling just for me". These videos by Patricia Johnston were designed for young French children to begin to learn English. This is a great teaching resource for early childhood learners and/or special education students and would work well in conjunction with a unit on Earth and to help build backgr
Learning aware environement: a Laboratorium of epidemiological studies
One challenge of the Laboratorium is to have the capacity to recognize and capture relevant events from observing the human activity, the ability to understand the learning needs and then to provide the adequate feedback in whatever form. Another challenge is the mapping of inaccessible phenomena into the sensible and temporal space of the classroom. Our design combines gaming situations and ambient technologies in the context of learning bio-statistics. This paper presents a method and a formal
USGS Biological Resources: National Activities
The mission of the United States Geological Survey's Biological Resources Discipline involves working with others to provide the scientific understanding and technologies needed to support the sound management and conservation of our Nation's biological resources. This website contains a comprehensive listing of biological research taking place within the USGS biology branch. This portal provides access to the National Bird Banding Project, the National Park Service flora and fauna database, the

Building Biographies: A Research Unit
Using handheld technology, students will research and report on a famous person. Bibliographic data and notes will be taken using Memo Pad, information will be organized in PiCo Map, reports presented through Palm eBook format, and a follow-up quiz for classmates will be developed in Quizzler. Within the project, students will learn the fundamental principles involved in completing a research project. This is designed as an integrated unit to be taught by the classroom teacher and media speciali
Science: from the lab to Second Life and across the world
We talk to Sue Stocklmayer from the Australian National University about the joys and pitfalls of international science communication; and to Rough Science's Dr Jonathan Hare about his research into Buckmeinsterfullerene. We also return to the SCHOME project (from Programme 5) and meet the students involved - in the real world! The interviews are recorded by OU staff and the programme is hosted by Dr Mike Bullivant, also from the OU/BBC television series Rough Science.
Earth Science Rocks!
In this earth science themed programme, Dr Sarah Davies delve into a fantastic project - Enabling Remote Activity - which helps mobility-impaired students take part in field work. Wes Fraser also chats with Dr Mark Brandon about his fascinating research in the Antarctic. Finally, we eavesdrop on a conversation between two OU researchers - Dr Will Gosling and Dr Palavi Anand about how finding out about the past may help us to understand climate change in the future. The interviews are recorded by
aluMATTER: Strengthening Mechanisms in Aluminium
Pure, untreated aluminium is a soft metal with insufficient strength for most engineering applications. In order to take advantage of its low density, aluminium has to be strengthened by one or more mechanisms. These are considered in detail in this selection of interactive Flash movies from the award-winning aluMATTER website available to download.
aluMATTER: Crystallographic Texture in Aluminium
This selection of interactive Flash movies from the award-winning aluMATTER website available to download presents method of representing, or characterising crystallographic textures. It helps to understand how crystallographic textures are formed and how they effect properties in aluminium alloys. Crystallographic texture is necessarily very complex as it describes the orientations in 3D space of thousands or millions of individual grains.
Genetic Analysis - Question Sets
The Genetic Analysis SBLi is a set of scenarios designed to support an undergraduate course in Genetics. In the scenarios the student plays the role of a genetics researcher, and performs simulated experiments to reinforce concepts taught in lectures. This project is part of the the Higher Education Academy's UK Centre for Bioscience Open Educational Resources programme. This package contains question sets extracted from the Genetic Analysis Scenarios so that these can be easily used seperately.
Sustainable Development
The graduation specialisation 'Technology in Sustainable Development' was launched in September 2000. It fits into all Msc curricula at TU Delft. The specialisation is open to all TU Delft students who completed their Bsc program.
The graduation specialisation covers both broader and deeper knowledge regarding Sustainable Development (SD) and technology. Sufficient depth is achieved by the demand that SD has to be a core issue in the graduation project. Within each department, a so-called ‘SD
Engineering and Policy Analysis
In contemporary society, many of the most vexing issues we face cannot be solved by technology alone. Engineering excellence must be coupled with insight into societal needs and the mastery of project and process management tools.
At the intersection of technology and public policy
TU Delft's MSc Programme in Engineering and Policy Analysis (EPA) is an international interdisciplinary programme, designed to provide its graduates with a unique combination of technical, analytical and management
Oyez. Oyez. Oyez.: Supreme Court Resource
The Oyez Project is a multimedia archive devoted to the Supreme Court of the United States and its work. It aims to be a complete and authoritative source for all audio recorded in the Court since the installation of a recording system in October 1955. The Project also provides authoritative information on all justices and offers a virtual reality 'tour' of portions of the Supreme Court building, including the chambers of some of the justices.
Delft Design Guide
The Delft Design Guide presents an overview of product design approaches and methods used in the Bachelor and Master curriculum at the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering in Delft.
Product design at Industrial Design Engineering in Delft is regarded as a systematic and structured activity, purposeful and goal-oriented. Due to its complexity, designing requires a structured and systematic approach as well as moments of heightened creativity. In this guide we restrict ourselves deliberately t
Bringing a 2000-year-old painted warrior to life

Post-Conflict Reconstruction: Global Health Concerns and Issues A Public Health Seminar delivered by Candace Chandra, Founder and President, Canary Strategies, LLC on Monday, May 10, 2010 Due to the severity, length, and frequency of conflict around the world, global health is increasingly involved in post-conflict reconstruction. Conflict is increasingly impacting not just the burden of disease and prevalence of serious injuries (including mental health), but also destroying health care systems and physical infrastructure - creating an emergency
