Home-School Knowledge Exchange and Transformation in Primary Education (2001 - 2004)
This is a website resource which is intended to provide access to a project based at the University of Bristol. The project is part of the ESRC’s TLRP (Teaching and Learning Research Programme). The project sought to enhance children’s learning in literacy and numeracy and to facilitate transfer between primary and secondary school through improving knowledge exchange between the home and school.

This project examined how mentors contribute to the development of beginning teachers’ subject specific knowledge. The focus was on ‘explaining’ in science teaching.
The researchers found that written feedback on its own was of limited use but it was in discussion that the more helpful advice arose. Mentors’ descriptive and evaluative statements did not, by themselves, help whereas focused suggestions with justifications were more helpful to beginning teachers.

Schools and Crime - Tackling Gang Culture
The resource is a Teachers TV programme which investigates the impact of ‘gang culture’ on young peoples’ lives through interviews with pupils and teachers from two London schools (one primary and one secondary), youth workers, academics and politicians. It also observes (briefly) young people from the secondary school developing a multi-media project about gang culture.
