Healthy People 2010 disease prevalence in the Marshfield Clinic Personalized Medicine Research Proje
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of Healthy People 2010 disease conditions in a large population-based cohort in central Wisconsin (WI, USA) and to consider how these conditions can be prioritized for research based on the use of healthcare services, the prevalence of various disease states and the resulting study power.
Methods: Healthy People 2010 diagnoses were estimated for participants in
the Personalized Medicine Research Project (PMRP), a large popula
Prostate Cancer Screening Decision Making Under Controversy: Implications for Health Promotion Pract
Prostate cancer is a major health problem for U.S. men and is characterized by paradoxes and controversies. Despite the wide availability of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, prostate cancer screening remains a controversial practice mainly because the direct impact of screening on mortality is not yet proven. As the relative value of screening, early detection, and treatment strategies continue to be debated, glaring racial-ethnic disparities persist with African American men experienci

Culturally appropriate health education for type 2 diabetes mellitus in ethnic minority groups
Background

A New Tool for Epidemiology: The Usefulness of Dynamic Agent Models in Understanding Place Effects o
A major focus of recent work on the spatial patterning of health has been the study of how features of residential environments or neighborhoods may affect health. Place effects on health emerge from complex interdependent processes in which individuals interact with each other and their environment and in which both individuals and environments adapt and change over time. Traditional epidemiologic study designs and statistical regression approaches are unable to examine these dynamic processes.
Community Resilience as a Metaphor, Theory, Set of Capacities, and Strategy for Disaster Readiness
Communities have the potential to function effectively and adapt successfully in the aftermath of disasters. Drawing upon literatures in several disciplines, we present a theory of resilience that encompasses contemporary understandings of stress, adaptation, wellness, and resource dynamics. Community resilience is a process linking a network of adaptive capacities (resources with dynamic attributes) to adaptation after a disturbance or adversity. Community adaptation is manifest in population w

Dynamic voice codec determination mechanism for VoIP
Emerging voice over IP networks dictate a need for efficient network resource management schemes to mitigate the best-effort nature of IP. Traditional quality of service and call admission control mechanisms provide network resource allocation to static voice flows with parameters fixed by a selected voice codec. Frequently, the available bandwidth is not efficiently utilized, which results in a lower-than-possible average voice quality and potential wastage of resources. In this thesis, the aut
Prediction of variation in dimensional tolerance due to sheet metal hydroforming using finite elemen
Hydroforming of aluminum sheets is very important in the aircraft industry, due to the advantages of less wrinkling and cost effectiveness. Numerous research has been conducted in this field, which deals with the development of methods and tools to control accuracy of the bend and prediction of the springback after the sheet metal has been formed. Rivets are the most commonly used fasteners to fit together the subassemblies of the aircraft. The holes for riveting are punched after any forming op
Developing an effective mentoring program
Formal mentoring programs are increasingly recognized as a means of recruitment and retention in a library setting. An effective mentoring program assists new librarians with diverse backgrounds in their professional growth and benefits organizational culture. In this paper, the authors examine different models of mentoring programs in the library profession and discuss the process of developing a university library mentoring program. This case study explores the mentor’s and mentee’s persp
The consequences of antisocial behavior in older male siblings for younger brothers and sisters
The contribution of younger male and female siblings’ conflict and involvement in deviant activities with their older brothers to younger siblings’ adolescent adjustment problems was examined in the context of parenting. Ineffective parenting during younger siblings’ childhood had no direct effects on adjustment, but facilitated their exposure to older brothers’ deviant peers and activities. The effect of sibling conflict on adjustment was mediated by younger siblings’ co-participation
Dear Obama: A Message from Victims of the LRA
Since September 2,008, at least 2000 civilians have been killed and nearly 3,000 others have been abducted during attacks by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). The LRA, a Ugandan rebel group, operates in the border region between northern Congo, the Central African Republic and south Sudan. Many of the victims, including children, were beaten to death, had their skulls crushed or their heads sliced with machetes. Abducted children are forced to kill their family members.

They shouted "got the bitch..."
On the 23rd October 2002 during a performance of a new Russian romantic
musical, Nord Ost, in a Moscow theatre, members of the cast were going
through their paces singing and dancing, dressed in military uniform.
Another man appeared from the wings, also in military costume, and fired
a weapon into the air. The audience at first believed this to be part of the
performance. However, it didn’t take long for them to realize that this was
not art but real life, and the beginning of what turn

Space between words
After spending such a considerable time working with narratives and type I came across this process of cutting out type to create different depths of field. The columns of a newspaper were it's original inspiration.
Obviously, now though, this piece is no longer about the actual words. Instead I was implying that the space between words is where our thoughts take shape.
