First Semester Retention: Love of Academics or Love of School?
Tom Kane, professor of psychology, presents research results regarding findings on retention of first year students.
This presentation was part of the Academic Advisory Forum.
11.131 Educational Theory and Practice III (MIT)
This is the final course in the three course sequence (11.129, 11.130 and 11.131) that deals with the practicalities of teaching students. Our areas of study will include: educational psychology, identification of useful resources that support instruction, learning to use technology in meaningful ways in the classroom, finding more methods of motivating students, implementing differentiated instruction and obtaining a teaching job.
Festive Science! A Holiday Chem Lab
This video from ACS features Diane Bunce, Ph.D, professor of Chemistry at Catholic University of America. She demonstrates several holiday activities and experiments, first addressing the procedures for each activity and then discussing the chemistry concept behind it. The activities include: snow globes - viscosity and density, bounding snow balls - polymers and cross-linking, and holiday cards - polar and non-polar reactions. These "holiday" activities could easily be adapted to other tim
Expatriate Spaces, Ex-Soviet Places: Narratives of Americans Abroad in Turn-of-the-Millennium Post-C
The arrival of countless young North Americans into post-Cold War Central and Eastern Europe coincided with a U.S. recession, the collapse of Soviet influence in the former Warsaw Pact countries, and the consequential easing of travel restrictions. I show how overlooked narrative representations of sojourning Western twentysomethings carving out a space for themselves and negotiating their role in a newly internationalized place demonstrate a redefining of the American expat identity as a perfor
Exploring Teachers’ Beliefs through Collaborative Journaling: A Qualitative Case Study of Japanese
This qualitative case study was implemented to describe, interpret, and document
preservice EFL teachers’ learning processes through collaborative journaling and
gained awareness for all participants (including myself as a participant-observer). Four
preservice EFL teachers in Japan (two males and two females) participated in the study.
At the time of the investigation, they were all undergraduate students studying in an EFL
teacher education program at a Japanese university. To investigate th
Learning Objects Need Badly Instructional Digital Libraries Support
In this paper, we present a standard definition for learning objects, a controversy around it, and the resulted working definition, along with features to be held by learning objects, benefits of the object-oriented approach for learning, some pros and cons for using learning objects, and finally some quality standard guidelines for these objects. In addition, we introduce shortly a taxonomy of learning object types and the metadata standards that can be used for learning objects and the way the
First version of the awareness-support tool
This document reports on the awareness services offered through two tools developed in the context of the PALETTE project (Collaboration services), namely e-Logbook and CoPe_it! We first present the awareness types that need to be supported and we proceed by describing in detail how these are conceived and implemented in the abovementioned tools. Moreover, we briefly report on the integration of these tools, focusing on the additional awareness services resulting from this integration.,First ver
Pedagogical evaluation of e-learning courses - Adapted pedagogical index
E-learning is becoming an important part of education and it can provide new possibilities for disabled people. Critical evaluation is becoming indispensable, especially in e-learning systems supporting disabled people, as very little has been done in this area. This paper describes the development of adapted pedagogical index (AdaPI), which demonstrates the pedagogical effectiveness of different courses created and adapted for disabled.
Using the Internet to Improve University Education: Problem-oriented Web-based Learning with MUNICS
A principled approach to the design of problem-oriented, web-based learning at the university level is presented. The principles include providing authentic contexts with multimedia, supporting collaborative knowledge construction, making thinking visible with dynamic visualisation, quick access to content resources via ICT, and flexible support by tele-tutoring. These principles are used in the MUNICS learning environment, which is designed to help students of computer science to apply their co

"The NIST X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) Database gives easy access to the energies of many photoelectron and Auger-electron spectral lines." The website offers concise definitions of the data fields. Users can search the element data by binding energy, auger kinetic energy, auger parameter, doublet separation, chemical shift, or surface/interface core-level shift. The website allows users to retrieve data for groups of elements, an element in a compound, chemical name, and chemical clas
ToxMystery
ToxMystery was created by the United States National Library of Medicine to help children from 7-11 years old learn about household chemical hazards. Toxie the Cat helps kids find the hazards hidden in each room and offers hints when needed. When all the risky spots in the house have been discovered, Toxie dances and celebrates and players can print a personalized certificate of completion. ToxMystery has been usability tested by kids and educators, receiving high grades by all.
ToxMystery is
An examination of two types of timeline, linear vs. staggered: a mixed method approach
This study conducted as follow-up study to evaluate effects of two different time-based interfaces, linear and staggered. This study also tries to reveal users preferences when they look for information in two different computer-based timeline. Explanatory mixed method design was implemented. In the first part, quantitative, there were 42 subjects. Results shows no significant difference between two types of computer-based time-line in terms of task completion time and answer accuracy. In the
Investigating human computer interaction issues in designing efficient virtual learning environments
Today, when an enormous number of computer-based systems exist, the human activities are being computer mediated. Usually, in designing the interface to those systems, the human-computer interaction is left behind without consideration. In this paper, a literature in human-computer interaction is to be reviewed and the technology aspect of human computer interaction is to be analyzed. Also, general design principles are to be reviewed. According to all these issues, recommendations to designing
