Bio Mechatronics
Biomechatronics is a contraction of biomechanics and mechatronics. In this course the function and coordination of the human motion apparatus is the central focus, and the design of assistive devices for the support of the function of the motion apparatus. Study Goals: The student must be able to: 1. Make a Problem Analysis of a given assignment in the field of the human motion apparatus and its interaction with an assistive device ; Identify the underlying cause [pathology] of the problem as p

Computational GRIDs and online laboratories
Many projects addressing the creation of online laboratories have been developed recently. They have a common goal: to enable students and professional learners to get hands-on experience without moving from the places where they are. Nevertheless, the found solutions are often very different among them, and interoperability between different online laboratories systems does not exist. In this paper we present our work around the exploitation of Grid technologies for sharing instrumentation and

Chronos: a network for Earth system history
CHRONOS (Greek: time) aims to create a dynamic, interactive and time-calibrated framework for Earth history. CHRONOS's main objective is to develop a network of databases and visualization and analytical methodologies that broadly deal with chronostratigraphy - that is, with developing a better tool (the time scale) for understanding fundamental Earth processes through time. The CHRONOS platform will provide a new investigative environment for interdisciplinary Earth history research that includ

Building-Stone Geology
This laboratory activity gives an example of the creativity required when teaching non-native rock types. In order to study igneous and metamorphic rocks in central Florida (a huge area consisting solely of sedimentary rock), geology students examined building stones in downtown St. Petersburg. Each student picked a particular rock type used in a particular way (structure, decorative facade, etc.), performed geologic tests on it, read up on its properties, history, and uses, and prepared a paper

Fe, C 0.9 (wt%) steel, hypereutectoid, quenched and tempered
This is an example of a quenched and tempered steel. The steel is initially quenched from the austenite phase field to form hard and brittle martensite. Subsequently the steel is reheated to allow diffusion of the interstitially trapped carbon and hence reduction of the lattice strain. This results in a softer and tougher steel.
