Creating the Hall of Planet Earth
This Web site tells the stories behind the making of the museum's Gottesman Hall of Planet Earth. Along with tracking the hall's creation, the following sections also tell the story of our planet's creation. What You See Here Is Out There introduces students to the five big questions asked by Earth scientists. The Man Who Knew a Mountain takes a look at how obsidian from the Medicine Lake volcano became part of the exhibit. Expeditions explains how museum expeditions sought the answers to the fi

Orchestrating cell separation in plants: What are the risks and benefits?
In this podcast, Professor Roberts from the School of Biosciences discusses his research into the mechanism responsible for regulating cell separation in plants. In particular how plants 'shed' parts of themselves such as leaves or fruit. Professor Roberts explores the potential application of his research, through prevention or encouraging of the 'shedding' process, agricultural harvests could potentially be increased or even synchronised. Professor Roberts also discusses the resistance faced

Plasmapause Convects to the Magnetopause During Halloween Solar Storm
The plasma sphere is a region of ionospheric plasma which co-rotates with the Earth, carried by the magnetic field lines. The plasma pause marks the outer boundary of this region. This colder plasma is more easily moved by the electric fields created by strong solar storms. In the Halloween 2003 event, these fields convected some of the cold plasma out to the magnetopause (grey, semi-transparent surface) and reduced the size of the cold plasma region near the Earth. For this visualization, the 3

Topological Features of a Compressible Plasma Vortex Sheet - a Model of the Outer Heliospheric Wind
The Voyager and Pioneer Spacecraft have detected large-scale quasi-periodic plasma fluctuations in the outer heliosphere beyond 20 AU. A plasma vortex sheet model can explain these fluctuations and the observed correlations between various physical variables. The large scale outer heliosphere is modeled by solving the 3-D compressible magneto-hydrodynamic equations involving three interacting shear layers. Computations were done on a Cray computer at the NASA Center for Computational Sciences. S

Gaps in the Earths Radiation Belts
The Earth's radiation belts (violet & white) change considerably due to a number of influences, ranging from a changing solar wind to the lightning on the Earth. Here we see a range of variation in the electron flux in early December 2003. White indicates higher electron flux than violet. The gray curves represent the lines of the Earth's magnetic field. These radiation belts are constructed on a per-orbit basis with data from SAMPEX.

Kepler Mission Star Field Lithograph
This two-sided 8in. X 10in. print document depicts the Kepler Mission Field of View imposed upon a star field that includes the constellations Cygnus and Delphinus on the front. A description of the mission, the star selection constraints, the location of the field in the night sky, distances to the stars, and the CCD layout is included on the back. An image on the back also illustrates the distance the field is from the galactic center and the size of the field of view. NASA-s Kepler mission is

"From Molecules to Behavior: Synaptic Neurophysiology, Spring 2010"
"Like transistors in a computer, synapses perform complex computations and connect the brain's non-linear processing elements (neurons) into a functional circuit. Understanding the role of synapses in neuronal computation is essential to understanding how the brain works. In this course students will be introduced to cutting-edge research in the field of synaptic neurophysiology. The course will cover such topics as synapse formation, synaptic function, synaptic plasticity, the roles of synapses
