Chicano y Chicana: income differences among the largest U. S. Hispanic population
This study focuses on the wage gap between Mexican American men and Mexican American women, and factors contributing to this disparity. People of Mexican descent make up 67% of the U.S. Hispanic population. Previous research tends to lump Hispanics together, masking differences between groups. Even more, studies considering Hispanic subgroups rarely examine gender differences on income. Using secondary data analysis of the March 2005 Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplemen
Bored to death: William Inge’s women and The feminine mystique
Ever since Robert Brustein’s review of The Dark at the Top of the Stairs in November 1958, the role of the female characters in William Inge’s plays has been of interest to a number of critics. At that time, Brustein claimed that Inge’s female characters were "men-taming women" who were castrative to their husbands. After the publication of his review, many critics followed in suit and also described Inge’s women in the same terms; however, only one of these critics, Janet Juhnke, examin
Asymptotic fusion performance in a power constrained, distributed wireless sensor network
The performance of decentralized detection in power constrained wireless sensor network is analyzed. We consider two distributed processing schemes; the analog relay amplifier local processing and the quantized decision local processing. In the first model, the system is assumed to be subjected to a total power constraint and the distributed nodes are assumed to perform analog relay amplifier local processing. Under these assumptions, we show that, we can monotonically improve the fusion perform
Dynamic voice codec determination mechanism for VoIP
Emerging voice over IP networks dictate a need for efficient network resource management schemes to mitigate the best-effort nature of IP. Traditional quality of service and call admission control mechanisms provide network resource allocation to static voice flows with parameters fixed by a selected voice codec. Frequently, the available bandwidth is not efficiently utilized, which results in a lower-than-possible average voice quality and potential wastage of resources. In this thesis, the aut
Basic computer literacy training to increase comfort levels with computers and improve behaviors of
This study researched the effect of a basic computer course on the comfort level with computers and Internet on 17 Spanish-speaking, non-computer literate adults. It also identified any increase of the participants’ integration of computers and Internet into employment related activities. Five male and twelve female Hispanic adults completed a four-day basic computer literacy training course. Data collected through pre and post content exams; pre, post, and follow-up comfort and use surveys, a
Protective bollard design for high speed impact energy absorption
As is passenger safety of paramount importance to the manufacturer of passenger vehicles, so is the security of the nation to its government. Recent developments in the usage of heavy vehicles by militant outfits to carry out attack has become the main concern of many governments around the world, hence the existence of some kind of barrier to stop heavy vehicles from entering restricted areas was thought of. This barrier must be able to provide both visibility and security without being much ex
The effect of sustained silent reading on high school student’s lexile scores and attitudes toward
This research attempted to find the relationship between the consistent practice of Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) and a student’s lexile score. Two English I classes in an urban high school completed surveys that focused on a student’s attitude toward recreational and school reading. The Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) provided the two English I classes a lexile score. Class A practiced SSR three days a week, while Class B did not. After the research period of twelve weeks, the two Engli

Sunday by the Sea (1953) - extract
By kind permission of director Anthony Simmons, we present an extract from this delightful portrait of East Enders on holiday in the Essex resort of Southend-on-Sea, shot over two weekends (one a bank holiday) in August 1951. There is no commentary - instead, Simmons cut the film to fit the rhythms of traditional London music-hall songs, this particular one performed by Joan Sterndale-Bennett with Betty Lawrence on the piano.
The complete film is one of 32 included in the four-disc DVD box 'Sh

Financial Crisis and Economic Recession
The current financial and economic situation of the world should be analysed from the point of view of the Austrian Business Cycle Theory as developed by Mises and Hayek. Professor Huerta De Soto will present innovative solutions to the banking crisis and credit crunch working within the tradition of the Austrian School masters, Mises and Hayek. He will also unveil his proposal for similar legislative change that the "Peel Act" or Bank Charter Act of 1844 achieved with regards to the over issue
