I Don’t Believe My Eyes!
Students develop their understanding of the effects of invisible air pollutants with a rubber band air test, a bean plant experiment and by exploring engineering roles related to air pollution. In an associated literacy activity, students develop visual literacy and write photograph captions. They learn how images are manipulated for a powerful effect and how a photograph can make the invisible (such as pollutants) visible. Note: You may want to set up the activities for Air Pollution unit, Less
This lesson begins with a demonstration prompting students to consider how current generates a magnetic field and the direction of the field that is generated. Through formal lecture, students learn Biot-Savart’s law in order to calculate, most simply, the magnetic field produced in the center of a circular current carrying loop. For applications, students find it is necessary to integrate the field produced over all small segments in an actual current carrying wire.
Power Your House with Water
Students learn how engineers design devices that use water to generate electricity by building model water turbines and measuring the resulting current produced in a motor. Students work through the engineering design process to build the turbines, analyze the performance of their turbines and make calculations to determine the most suitable locations to build dams.
Students learn why and how motion occurs and what governs changes in motion, as described by Newton's three laws of motion. They gain hands-on experience with the concepts of forces, changes in motion, and action and reaction. In an associated literacy activity, students design a behavioral survey and learn basic protocol for primary research, survey design and report writing.
1.322 Soil Behavior (MIT)
This class presents a detailed study of soil properties with emphasis on interpretation of field and laboratory test data and their use in soft-ground construction engineering. Topics to be covered include: consolidation and secondary compression; basic strength principles; stress-strain strength behavior of clays, emphasizing effects of sample disturbance, anisotropy, and strain rate; strength and compression of granular soils; and engineering properties of compacted soils. Some knowledge of fi
Freeman Shaves 28-Year-Old Beard for a Cause
Ed Freeman; faculty at the Darden School of Business, knows a good cause when he sees it! Challenging Darden students, alumni and peers to raise $10,000 for SHE (Shelter for Help and Emergency), he committed to shave his 28 year-old beard if the amount was met or exceeded. February 2012.
21L.015 Introduction to Media Studies (MIT)
Introduction to Media Studies is designed for students who have grown up in a rapidly changing global multimedia environment and want to become more literate and critical consumers and producers of culture. Through an interdisciplinary comparative and historical lens, the course defines "media" broadly as including oral, print, theatrical, photographic, broadcast, cinematic, and digital cultural forms and practices. The course looks at the nature of mediated communication, the functions of media
Common Lionfish Hunting and Feeding in a Group
This short video gives excellent real life footage of a group of Lionfish hunting and feeding on fish at the bottom of the ocean. Students will enjoy the close up shots of these beautiful fish against the background of a sunken structure in background. A striking, boldly-patterned fish, the common lionfish (Pterois volitans) has distinctive bands of red and white stripes and conspicuous, elongated, fan-like fins. This is a great resource to help build background knowledge and to help make r

Tibetan Nomads' Rights
This is a political 4:30 video about "China's policy of settling all of 2.25 million Tibetan nomads is a death sentence to the nomadic way of life in Tibet, an intrinsic part of Tibetan culture. " It could be used as the start of a research project or to have students check for facts. Regardless, the video must be previewed.

How Music Works 1 - Melody - Part 2 Narrator is Howard Goodall. Intervals are further discussed in this episode. Semitone is the smallest interval and a whole tone is a whole step away from the previous note. Scales are also discussed, they are note groups. Modes have a different effect on the listener’s emotions, happy, sad, Christmas, morning, evening, and many more.
