"They Are Mostly All Foreigners on Strike": Joseph Fish Speaks on the 1919 Steel Strike
In the dramatic 1919 steel strike, 350,000 workers walked off their jobs and crippled the industry. The U.S. Senate Committee on Education and Labor set out to investigate the strike while it was still in progress. In his testimony before the committee, Homestead, Pennsylvania, steelworker Joseph Fish described conditions in the steel mills as good and maintained that only "one or two" Americans have joined the strike.
The Great Energy Debate
The National Geographic Society's global energy debate lesson plan explores the controversial issues surrounding the energy debate in the United States. Students will research recent initiatives being taken in this area and analyze their implications. They will then assume the roles of pivotal stakeholders in this debate and testify to a mock congressional committee responsible for making decisions about public lands and energy resources. This Starting Point website describes the learning goals
Soil Judging
This site describes a contest in which students must correctly characterize the horizons of soils in four different pits within a strict time limit. The site contains photographs of the activity as well as links to the Soil Science Education homepage, links, resources, soil science basics, soil and society, soil and the environment, information on working with soil, soil and agriculture and soil and students.
Ideas for Resources: Geology Lab Manual
The Ideas for Resources: Geology Lab Manual is highlighted as part of the Starting Point Teaching Collection. This site contains a partially-fleshed-out list of questions and situations dealing with water, minerals, and public policy intended to be incorporated into role-playing activities. It is designed to accompany a course on resource geology or environmental geology. Its message is that access to geological resources depends upon a complex interplay between economic, political, legal, envir
City Archives
'City Archives' was written and directed by Richard Foreman, founder and director of the Ontological Hysteric Theater. He serves as the narrator for this work, discussing the power of 'the foreign' and images, talking directly into a microphone in a purposely stilted manner and addressing questions to the viewer. A sort of classroom overpopulated by adults sets the stage for the work. Phrases are written and erased on a blackboard, and women gaze out a window, physically supporting planks of woo
Rocks and Weathered Rocks
In this lab, students examine what happens when rocks weather, how different minerals weather at different rates, and what the ultimate byproducts are. This website builds context for lab use, details the learning goals and teaching notes, provides teaching materials and lab assessment recommendations, and additional references and resources.
Glacial Geology in the Field
This lab studies glacial deposits to determine where glaciers come from, how they deposit material, and what glaciation records tell us about glacial processes. Building a context for its use, including links to related field labs, this website details the learning goals of this lab. It includes teaching notes and materials, as assessment recommendation, and links to additional resources and references.
Starting Out With Earth History
This activity asks students to place 6-10 events in Earth history on a timeline, first working in small groups and then as a class. Then, through questions, important points such as how certain events are dated, where humanity fits in, and so forth, can be brought up. The Starting Point website builds a context for the exercise by detailing the learning goals, teaching notes and materials (downloadable), and additional resources.
Drake Equation
Students estimate the number of civilizations in the galaxy by first estimating the number of craters on the Moon and then by performing estimates of multiple-variable systems culminating in the use of the Drake Equation. In this three-part activity, students use estimation techniques to describe complex situations.
Stargazing
This OLogy activity introduces kids to the joys and challenges of stargazing. The activity sets the stage by telling kids that there hidden among the night sky's thousands of stars are constellations and planets. To help them search out these constellations and planets, it provides helpful guidelines and resources for stargazing. These include tips for distinguishing stars from airplanes, satellites, meteors, and planets; a detailed map of the night sky; and directions for recording observations
How fast do materials weather?
In the activities described on this website, instructors giving a lecture on weathering ask students to calculate weathering rates from tombstone weathering data from urban and rural settings. The Starting Point site includes downloadable teaching materials, information on learning goals and context for the exercise, and links to useful resources and references.
From Book to Video: Using a Book to Make a Classroom Video
Students learn the differences between a book and a video, then storyboard scenes from a favorite poem or book.
