This Day in History August 31: Polish Government Signs Accord with Gdansk Shipyard Workers
On this day in 1980, representatives of the communist government of Poland agree to the demands of striking shipyard workers in the city of Gdansk. Former electrician Lech Walesa led the striking workers, who went on to form Solidarity, the first independent labor union to develop in a Soviet bloc nation. (1:00)

Aloha! I'm R. Barri Flowers.
I graduated from Michigan State University in June 1977 with a B.A. in Criminal Justice and in June 1980 with an M.S. in Criminal Justice. My mentors at MSU were Zolton Ferency, Ralph Turner, Robert Trojanowicz, and Bill Cross, among others. I have many fond memories of my time at MSU, such as the big hair, the coolest rooms on campus, the summer trip to London, England, and of course, the graduation.
I also met my wife at MSU during one magical Halloween night. Mo
