Dedication Ceremonies for the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument, May 15, 1902
After nearly 14 years of construction, the monument was officially dedicated on May 15, 1902. Those attending the gala event were treated to a poetic recitation by James Whitcomb Riley. Fellow Hooiser Lew Wallace was master of ceremonies and former Secretary of State John W. Foster delivered an address. Map of the Route of the Welcome Home Parade
The five-mile-long parade route began on Washington Street, then turned toward Meridian Street and through the Victory Arch, specially constructed for the event. The troops circled toward Market Street and traveled north on Pennsylvania Street angling at Fort Wayne Avenue to Delaware Street. The marchers turned west on Sixteenth Street and headed south on Meridian back to Monument Circle.
